Mayor, Councilman to Propose Cutting Unfilled Positions

Five job titles would be cut under proposal

Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis and Councilman Joseph Sangiovanni will propose an ordinance at the next township council meeting that will do away with five unfilled positions in township government.

The positions were included in the recent restructuring plan that was vetoed by the mayor. The mayor's proposal will not include cuts to any filled positions, nor will it create any new positions.

The previous restructuring ordinance would have cut several positions, including those filled by deputy business administrator Juan Bellu, recreation department head Dave Francese and council secretary Jennifer Hartmann, and created three new positions, including a deputy township clerk.

Officials from opposing sides of the political aisle argued over whether the move would have saved money or cost money.

While the new set of cuts does not eliminate any current salaries from the books, there is the potential for saving as much as $866,000 since there would be no chance of the positions ever being filled.

"The positions were created but never filled during a restructuring of the township," said Acropolis. "Our department heads and employees are doing a great job so we never saw the need to fill the positions and add supervisors.  Taking these titles off the books will prevent them from being filled now or in the future by any mayor which will potentially save our taxpayers a lot of money."

Acropolis said if he had line item veto power, he would have allowed the unfilled positions to be eliminated but rejected the other aspects of the restructuring.

"This ordinance will give the council another chance to eliminate these positions to make sure they are never filled and not add any further supervisors," Acropolis said.

Council President John Ducey, a proponent of the original restructuring plan that was vetoed by Acropolis, told Brick Patch he would support the new proposal, but wishes it went further.

"I'd rather see him go all in," said Ducey, of Acropolis. "The mayor's plan has potential savings, which is good. Actual savings is better, but at least it's a step in the right direction."

Thank you for the laugh. Acropolis is so funny, you can see right through him and his vailed attempts. What exactly is it that Juan and Dave do to earn their pay checks?

The Mayor and Councilman Sangiovanni. Pretty easy to cut something that is nonexistant. Saves nothing but protects the Mayor's buddies and his job at the TRMUA.

I wonder what Juan has on these two for then to fight hard to save his job?
BW October 22, 2012 at 01:42 PM
Juan needs his job, he has 210k+ in IRS liens to pay

You can't believe a word that either one of these two partisan hacks say. They can't be trusted to tell the truth about anything. They have proven to the voters that they are dishonest.

Why did Brando and Toth not support this Propose Cutting Of Unfilled Positions?
J.JONES October 22, 2012 at 02:55 PM
Those 5 seats were part of the Dems plans to save money for the town correct ? So if no one is in those positions where's the savings..What did they think they were doing. Or didn't they say they were going to rename some postions ..No saving at all...

What a GREAT idea! I'm going to apply the same strategy to my own household, I'm eliminating the positions of : Butler, Upstairs and Downstairs Maids, Chauffeur, Cook, Poolboy, Gardner, Masseuse and Psychic Advisor. I'm just giddy with all the money I'm going to save! Thank you Steve for your guidance.

Juan has job in Brick, Steve and family have job at TRMUA, one hand wash other. Juan has large tax liens to pay. Steve make sure Juan's job safe using no-good attorney who meet with Solomon Dwek, and good friends with Mike Ritacco, both in federal jail. Juan need Steve and Steve need Juan. Can't make this stuff up.

I have a better idea. Cut 20% out of every single department running this Town. No exceptions. Town Hall, Police, DPW, Recreation, etc., etc. I guarantee you that crime will not go up, the streets will still be fixed, garbage will still be picked up. The only change you will see is a 20% cut in your taxes and a huge budget surplus. Not one politician here has the spine to put this on the agenda.

How is the Mayors plan able to save $800k when there not filled? Yet he criticed the Dems plan that would have saved $400k. "A wise man makes his own decisions, an ignorant man follows the public opinion." -Chinese Proverb

The mayor forgot to say he hired a PR person for his reelection campaign

I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but how does elimanating jobs that are costing nothing save us money? Cut the non required political plum jobs like Bellus',or does that make too much sense. Sangiovani must go also.

Dan Nee... Little suggestion, read the old Sampler by Ed Muller...he question everything and requestioned it again..
What you talkin about Willis? October 23, 2012 at 12:37 AM
Let me get this straight....taxpayers have been paying taxes for unfilled positions? If they were unfilled and cut, we won't miss the services they were not providing. But will we see the tax savings or will the council redirect it to pay for healthcare or pay raises for who ever is less. How do we get an accounting of how many employees we have how much they cost us? We better follow the money trail on this.
Sam Foster October 23, 2012 at 03:58 AM
So, councilman Sangiovanni wants to eliminate jobs that are unfilled? How about a real savings, Councilman. Like not accepting your salary of $93,000 as Brick School Transportation Director. I really have to laugh at how hypocritical politicians are. When Councilman Sangiovanni, Councilman DeLuca, Mayor Acropolis all received their 2nd taxpayer paid jobs they all did the same thing: They announced to much fanfare that they were not going to accept the lower paying salary, but kept the higher paying salary: Mayor kept his $90k TRMUA salary, Sangiovanni kept his $93k Brick School salary, DeLuca kept his Lakewood DMV salary. Councilmen are paid about, what, $7k per yr? Council President $8k per year? This is one reason why I lost respect for all of the above.
Joseph Woolston Brick October 23, 2012 at 04:03 AM
Wow what a waste of money that is! Good for the economy though of nothing else.
What you talkin about Willis? October 23, 2012 at 04:13 AM
now wait a second why should he give up his pay for his job? is town council a job now? Who would do it for the in pay? Shut up with your stupid attacks or run for office. You got nothing to add but name calling and personal attacks. I bet you are a coward....run for office pal!!
Typical Obama Voter October 23, 2012 at 11:59 AM
Hey Arnold, If they went back to non partisan elections plenty of good people would run for office. Honest people won't join the crooked democrat or republican clubs. Honest people won't even associate with the democrat and republican crooks. Independents don't stand a chance in elections so people don't waste their time or money. The 2 political parties have stacked the decked in their favor.
