Electrical Issue Closes Drum Point Sports Complex's Night Activities

Mayor: other parks and facilities in town are now being inspected

An electrical issue in the light stanchions at the township's Drum Point Sports Complex that could pose a safety hazard has forced the closure of the complex at night.

Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis said the township's electrical contractor discovered problems with the wiring and grounding at the site recently while performing repairs related to Superstorm Sandy.

"After an electrical inspection, it was confirmed that the contractor who installed the lights in 2005 did not adhere to the plans," Acropolis said.

"When our electrical contractor informed me about the situation, I immediately instructed the administration to prepare a plan that would ensure the safety of our residents and others that utilize the fields," he said.

The Drum Point Sports Complex is the township's busiest recreation facility, he said.

As a result of the discovery, all night activities at the complex have been cancelled until further notice, though activities during the daylight hours will continue as scheduled.

Acropolis said he has instructed the township's current electrical contractor to inspect all projects that were installed by the vendor who did the work at Drum Point. The work, he noted, was performed before he became mayor.

The previous contractor worked in "various parks" around Brick, he said.

"We are going to make sure that we check all lights done by that vendor to make sure similar situations don’t exist anywhere else," he said. "This is being done right now and will continue until the inspections are done and all parks are deemed safe."

Acropolis said his administration will work to reschedule games and events that have been affected by the closure.
