Dam Repairs to Force Lane Shift

Dam began to falter Tuesday night

Repairs to the Brick Lake Park Dam will force the closure of the eastbound lanes of Cedar Bridge Avenue for several days, Brick officials announced late Wednesday.

The lanes will be closed to traffic beginning Wednesday morning at 7 a.m. in order for the repairs to be made to the dam, which is connected to Brick Lake, adjacent to a residential neighborhood located behind the Target store on Route 70. The repairs are expected to be completed by Saturday.

The leak was first noticed by an off-duty police officer who lives in the area, said Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis. When township officials went out to investigate the lower water level that had been reported, they discovered that water got behind a plastic piece in the dam, which allowed water to breach the overall structure.

The repair project will see the replacement of both sides of the weir, an overflow dam that allows water to pool in a certain area but also allows water to flow over the top. Earlier this summer, the mayor said, a center section of the dam was but not the side portions.

The most recent breach of the dam was not an emergency, and did not compromise any locals roads.

"There was no gushing water, or anything like that," the mayor said. "It [water] leaked out over a period of about 10 hours."

While the eastbound lanes of Cedar Bridge Avenue are closed, the westbound lanes will handle traffic in both directions. Motorists have been warned that some delays may result from the lane shift.
