Council Seeks Bids to Fix Brick Lake Dam

Dam broke during rainy weather the weekend of May 21

The township council began the process of seeking bids for the repair of the dam at Brick Lake following the dam's failure during a rain storm on May 21. Since then, according to township officials, the water level in the lake has fallen considerably. The council authorized the acceptance of bids for the repair project at its meeting Tuesday night.

“Brick Lake is a popular recreational area,” said Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis.  “Many residents and visitors to our community fish at the lake throughout the warm months and many skate on the lake when it is frozen.  We have to repair the dam to make sure these opportunities exist.”

Brick Lake is in the Brick Lake Park development. It is located off Cedar Bridge Avenue, adjacent to the Target property. According to township spokesman Ed Moroney, temporary repairs were made in the wake of the dam’s failure. Several residents of the Brick Lake Park development volunteered their time to assist in the repair efforts.

“I would like to thank the residents of Brick Lake Park who helped us out when the dam failed,” said Acropolis. “They showed great pride in their neighborhood and their community.”

Township engineering officials have estimated the cost of the project - including design, permitting and construction - to be $50,000.
