Brick to Add Beer, Wine Section to Summerfest Events

Section will be revenue generator for township, mayor says

Brick Township officials have decided to add a beer and wine section to the township's annual Summerfest events, a move Mayor John Ducey said can generate revenue for the township.

The township council approved a measure at its April 1 meeting to solicit bids from restaurants, distributors or bars interested in running the operation.

"This is somewhat of an experiment," said Council President Susan Lydecker, as alcohol has not been previously sold at Summerfest.

Ducey said plans call for the beer and wine section to be roped off and secured. Whichever business runs the event will be required – at their own cost – to provide certified identification checkers and security.

"You’re not going to be able to walk all through Summerfest with beer or wine," Ducey said. "It will be a special section like you see at Brielle Day or the Manasquan Firemen’s Fair."

Township Attorney Kevin Starkey said the successful bidder will have to name the township as additionally insured under its own liquor liability insurance policy.

"It’s going to be very strict, but with everyone having a safe and fun time," said Ducey.

"I think it’s been very successful in other townships," Lydecker added.

Beer and wine would be sold at three Summerfest concerts as well as the July 31 car show, Ducey said.

Township officials are separately planning a "Bricktoberfest" event that would take place in the fall.
