Boaters Urged: Secure Your Damaged Vessels

Removing electronics will prevent looting

Boaters whose vessels have become disabled in either Hurricane Sandy or the nor'easter that followed should remove electronics and personal items from them to prevent theft and looting, a national boating organization urged.

The advice is especially important as barrier island residents temporarily repopulate their hometowns, but will most likely have to leave their boats behind when they leave.

The Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) also suggested boat owners place a "No Trespassing" sign on their boats along with contact information.

Despite the suggestion, the organization said boaters should not climb in or on boats that have piled up together or are dangling from dock pilings or other obstructions.

Boaters should also protect their vessels from the elements and further water damage by covering them with a tarp or boarding up broken windows or hatches. Boats should also be dried out, either naturally from sunlight or by using an electric air handler.

"All wet materials such as cushions must be removed and saved for a potential insurance claim," the statement from BoatUS said.

If one's boat is sunk or must be moved by a salvage company, it is not recommended that boat owners sign any salvage or wreck removal contracts without first getting approval from the boat's insurance provider.

This is a joke...those of us from the barrier island aren't given enough time to do everything we need to do...

I hear ya, Ray. At least on LBI we were able to bring our vehicles to the "grab and go." I had my hitch ready to haul 'er outta there if anything was amiss, but fortunately my boat made it through OK. And to think I was toying with the idea of leaving her in the water a day before Sandy struck!

Would love to. Let me on the island so I can. Are they idiots?

Really. The friends I've spoken with know that their boats are on someone else's property. Until they can get there to assess the situation, how are they suppose to take care of them? And once they do get the HOUR to assess the situation, they're going to take care of their boat...??? and disregard their house..??? It must be nice to sit in a comfortable office, and tell people how they are supposed to deal with a catastrophic situation. Seriously, it is becoming more and more apparent that people don't have a clue.

I had an Adirondack wooden rowboat with a nameplate on it called "Whitcomb's End." I cannot find it anywhere and if someone finds it I would really appreciate knowing where it is and if it can be salvaged. The heartbreak is too tough to even explain because it was a family gift I could never replace.
Thank you.

Like Ray says! Some of us don't even have a time scheduled for the 1 hour BS bus tour yet. After this week - everyone else will have at least seen their homes. Still waiting for access with our own vehicles to be able to remove boats from our property and look into repairs/winter maintenance. any houses with minimal damage will not remain so for much longer. The clock is ticking.

The best part? It has a roomy interior but is still small enough to be brought on a plane as a carry on.

Funny Lelenore, I don't see that there are very many rules and regs. If it were elected it would notRead More be an infringement. I respect your opinion, but still feel six day time hours out of an entire week is not a lot to ask. If nothing else, would love to see a ban on gas leaf blowers. There are towns that have that in place. The mowers are not really IMHO that intrusive, but the leaf blowers and concrete cutters are another matter. Trouble is, people herebouts think they are in Montana and often are as you say, on 100 by 100 lots. What is the point of having all of this grass and trees if one never has the serenity about them to enjoy it? I think the ill effects of suburban noise pollution on health - blood pressure, aggression, release of the chemical cortisol etc. are well documented. Over a twenty five year period in time in Brick I find that this has become a real quality of life issue. At one point in my life I resided in mid town Manhattan and ya know what - being high up IT WAS QUIETER! Jackson? I don't think so. Doesn't Brielle have such an elective ordinance?

Right next to the liquor store. The reason it is taking so long is the politics of Acropolis andRead More Pat Botazzi. They kept the liquor store from opening for TWO years by controlling the planning board and caused the store owner HUNDREDS OF THOUSANS OF DOLLARES WITH COURT FIGHTS. Acropolis LOST THE COURT FIGHTS BUT CONTINUES TO BEAT UP ON THE LIQUOR STORE'S NEW TENNANT AS RETROBUTION Now Acropolis can play the code enforcement game and still get his happiness as a bigoted soon to be ex mayor and not a nice man. How about denying this. It is going to be a great store with the same owners and great food IF Acropolis doesn't have them go bankrupt due to him before they even open.
