Acropolis Named 'Resident of the Year'

Architect organization gives award to Brick mayor

Brick Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis has been recognized as the 2011 Resident of the Year by the American Institute of Architects Jersey Shore Section. He'll receive the award at the AIA-Jersey Shore Dinner Meeting on Wednesday, June 15, 2011, according to a township statement.

The AIA-Jersey Shore Resident of the Year Award is given to a resident who is recognized as having made major contributions to the built environment through community activity, legislative involvement, and professional practice or by means of other appropriate activities.

The organization recognized Acropolis for the creation of the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Renewable Energy (MACRE), the use of renewable energy at the municipal building, the creation of the Brick Architectural Review Committee, the adoption of the Mixed Use Overlay Zone in 2007 which allows residential and commercial uses to coexist on one lot, the creation of standards for streetscape design in the Herbertsville Road and Mantoloking Road corridors and the Township’s neighborhood park renovation and redevelopment program that has been upgrading so-called "pocket parks" in the community.

Acropolis called the AIA decision a "great award and an unexpected honor" on Monday.

"Throughout my time as councilman and mayor, I have worked hard to make Brick Township a better place because it is my home.  That is why we have worked to make sure our community has cleaner, safer and more modern parks.  It is why we have implemented streetscape standards and committees to review development plans.  It is why we are using renewable energy sources,” said Mayor Acropolis.  “I am proud of what we have accomplished.”
