9 Candidates File to Run in Brick Council Primaries; Scaturro Won't Seek Re-election

Candidates will vie for four open seats on the governing body

Nine candidates have filed to run in primary elections for their parties' nominations for four open seats on the Brick Township council. The Republican slate will be uncontested, while the Democrat side of the aisle will see one challenger to the regular organization's ticket. The filing deadline for candidates was 4 p.m. Monday.

Additionally, Councilwoman Ruthanne Scaturro has decided against seeking another term on the council, according to Brick Township Republican Party Chairman Frank Pannucci, Jr. John Catalano, who currently serves on the township planning board, will replace Scaturro – who has served on the council since 2003 – on the Republican ticket.

The regular Democrat organization will be represented in the June 7 primary election by John Ducey, Susan Lydecker, James Fozman and Robert Moore, according to township clerk Lynnette Iannarone. Joseph Lamb, a previous Democratic council candidate, will run for the party's nomination under an alternative Democrat organization, Brick Democrats for Fiscal Accountability.

The uncontested GOP ticket will include current council members Brian DeLuca
Michael Thulen and Anthony Matthews. They will be joined by Catalano.

The seven-seat council is currently taken up exclusively by Republicans. Democrats would need to claim all four open seats to ascertain a majority. Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis, also a Republican, won't face re-election until 2013.
