$1.3M In Sandy Aid Announced For Traders Cove

Grant will fund dock repairs

Federal officials announced Friday that $1.3 million in Superstorm Sandy recovery funding will go to repair docks at Traders Cove Park, which officially opened Thursday.

The park, which fronts Barnegat Bay off Mantoloking Road, will generate revenue for the township through the leasing of boat slips, though most of the docks at the site were destroyed or heavily damaged during the storm.

The announcement Friday came as part of a $2.5 million Sandy aid package which also included a $1,229,583 grant to Scotch Plains Township for debris removal.

Brick will receive a total of $1,338,746 for the marina.

Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis said Thursday that the marina will feature transient slips for boaters traversing the Intracoastal Waterway as well as both permanent piling docks and floating docks for local boaters who wish to keep their vessels there.

Township officials have said slip prices will be comparable to local private marinas.

"These federal grants will help promote the continued resurgence of our local communities in Sandy's aftermath," said U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security, which funds FEMA.  "We’ll keep working to help provide New Jersey's towns and cities with federal resources to rebuild stronger and be prepared for the next storm or emergency event."
