Teen Struck, Killed While Skateboarding

Prosecutor's office, Sheriff's Department, investigating the accident

A 19-year-old man on a skateboard was struck and killed on Jordan Road Wednesday night when a car, attempting to pass another vehicle, hit him, Deputy Chief Michael Mohel of the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office said Thursday.

Anthony Briffa, of Pineland Road, was struck by Patrick Doyle, 53, of Brick, just after 10 p.m. between Duchess Lane and Algonquin Trail. Briffa is suspected to have been operating his skateboard in the northbound lane of travel when Doyle attempted to pass another car, according to Capt. Thomas Hayes, also of the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office. Doyle's car then struck Briffa.

Emergency personnel on the scene pronounced Briffa dead at 10:35 p.m., Hayes said. No charges have been filed in the case, though the accident is still under investigation.

The accident was investigated by the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, Ocean County Sheriff's Department and the Toms River Police Department because Doyle is a township employee, according to Hayes.
