I am writing to make an appeal. The naming of names in the police blotter is a public humiliation of people arrested but not convicted of a crime. In the case of young people arrested for "pot"the police try to enlist them to entrap kids they "hang out with". They promise that their names will not be given to the newspapers if they cooperate. If a politician's child or one whose parents are well connected, no need to betray friends, which has put kids in harm's way with their peers. The police give those insider kids a "pass". When an arrested person refuses to play the game their name is given to the news media..The cops punish these brave young people for not betraying their friends and helping inflate their arrest numbers. The Press of Atlantic City, and our 2 local papers in Ocean City) no longer publish names. I appeal to the Patch to stop publishing names of those selectively arrested and publicly humiliated by your printing names of those people "innocent until proven guilty,( not convicted of anything). The police should not be aided and abetted by the Patch in coercing people by threatening them with publication in your 'media'. Steven Fenichel, MD

It’s tough when someone close to you has their name printed in the paper for arrest…

I agree..innocent until proven guilty. And if it was an officers family or close friend or someone with connections it would never be mentioned anyway. I do think OCPD does a decent job...BUT... Get off the marijuana thing..why does everyone with a badge look at it as a high level street drug ?!? That's insane..it's a natural herb that comes from a seed that has NO more chemicals added to it than every fruit and vegetable you hypocrites buy and eat daily. It is not man made like heroin, cocaine, crack, alcohol, or prescription drugs...so why is it in that catagory ? Makes no sense. Why should somone with a pound of marijuana be in a jail cell on the taxpayers dime next to, murderer, rapist, or child sex abuser? Can anyone really justify that ? Why do we waste SOOOOO much time, money, resources, and energy on this when real criminals are slipping away and laughing at the guy who got busted with a joint instead of finding the child sex abuser? OC just had a resident busted for child pornography...but instead of finding more, cracling down on more serious issues, or making it safer they are worried about the long haired kid on the skateboard headed to fo catch a wave and smoke a joint...legalize and tax is the only awnser. If you are for the BYOB but against legalization or even decriminalization of marijuana you are a complete fool with no common sense and need to read this post over and over again till you realize the truth..or have our head examined.
