Pedestrian Dies After Hopping Barrier, Being Struck on Brick Blvd.

Brick Township Police Traffic Safety Officer on site

A pedestrian was struck and killed Sunday night near the intersection of Cedar Bridge Avenue and Brick Boulevard.

The accident took place at approximately 7:40 p.m., police said.

Brick Police Sgt. David Bedrosian said a man estimated to be in his mid 40s – who has not yet been identified – hopped over the concrete 'Jersey' barrier 30 feet south of the intersection.

At that time, Charles J. Gardner, 42, of Brick, was travelling southbound on Brick Boulevard in his 2011 Ford Escape SUV and had a green light, Bedrosian said.

The pedestrian, who was wearing dark clothing, was hit soon after hopping over the barrier into a lane of traffic. The impact threw the pedestrian about 140 feet, Bedrosian said.

Gardner came to a stop about 120 feet away from the accident.

The pedestrian was declared dead at the scene, and traffic on Brick Boulevard was diverted for about two hours.

Bedrosian and Officer Scott Dierking of the Brick Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit responded and are conducting the crash investigation. The identity of the pedestrian and cause of the crash are still pending further investigation.

Anyone with information surrounding the crash is being asked to contact the Traffic Safety Unit at 732-262-1140.

You feel a comment is "horrible" and then you reply with your own horrible comment trying to blame the driver that struck the pedestrian. Did you not read the article? Sgt. Dave Bedrosian said that the driver had a green light. The victim was in dark clothing and jumped over a divider into the path of the vehicle. The driver has to now live with this horrific image, so it is incredibly disrespectful to attempt to blame the driver or even imply it as an investigation continues - Some comments are better left in your own head.

All you people need to shut your traps. Someone died here, and if you people had an common sense you would realize that no matter who you blame nothing can change the fact that a human being, a son, a brother, a friend maybe even a dad, died. You people make me sick, talking ill over someone who lost there life. How would you feel if someone talked ill over someone you knew that died! Have respect you idiots.

Thank you, Will. My father was in public works for 35 years. During that time, through his experiences, I learned about the really crazy stuff and horrible decisions people made when he was on emergency calls and supporting police, fire, and EMS. A lot of the times, the wreckage or debris from their decisions annd actions were parked in the DPW lot. He was also a biker and would see the things people would do on the road. I learned a ton of life lessons from him. I got to see lots more with my involvement with emergency services. Naturally, as someone who is a law abiding citizen and a representative of emergency services myself, I think very carefully of my actions. I just wish more people thought harder about their decisions and actions. No stupid jokes, offensive comments...just the truth.

Of course this is a tragedy, but it is one that could have been prevented. If pedestrian was in the cross walk, and the driver had driven illegally (such as running the red light) and killed the pedestrian, there would be a flood comments calling the driver negative names. In this case, the pedestrian chose to take an illegal action that is illegal BECAUSE it puts them in the path of oncoming traffic. So the pedestrian was either careless, because they knew the risk and took it anyway...or not very bright because they didn't understand the risk involved in their action. Either way, their decision to ignore safety laws resulted in a third party having their death on their hands. The driver will be haunted by this forever. This all could have been avoided if the pedestrian had not made such a terrible choice. That choice can justifiably be considered a stupid choice.

Ruben, perhaps where you originated from free speech is frowned upon. Here it is welcomed and a right. Perhaps you know first hand how many illegal immigrants cross like this.
Ashamed December 24, 2012 at 07:41 PM
WMS, you continue to show yourself as one of the most simple minded and angry people on this forum. You should seek some help for yourself. Merry Christmas!
Ruben Martinez December 24, 2012 at 07:50 PM
Hey listen here, I am from New Jersey, so how about you take your mouth and staple it shut. It's not my fault you were raised a single-minded racist. if you knew the pain associated with losing someone then you wouldn't be talking the way you are. Yea maybe it was his fault. So what? How is trash talking an entire ethnicity going to solve anything. All in all it is what it is. Nothing more nothing less.
WMS826 December 24, 2012 at 08:17 PM
Is it any wonder why society is so violent these days. Ruben...perhaps some anger management classes...please, I hope you are not a gun owner.
WMS826 December 24, 2012 at 08:47 PM

WMS826 December 24, 2012 at 08:49 PM

Guns are also used as deterrents. Just ask anyone in law enforcement or security.

The person getiing killed is tragic but I feel for the poor driver and the family of the deceased. That poor man will always second guess himself with the "What if I done this instead" scenarios. He will need help in getting over the guilt. To Mr. Gardner: "It wasn't your fault". No one can foresee ALL of the actions of others. Let's be thankful that no one else was injured or killed if he had performed an impossible evasive action in order to avoid hitting this poor pedestrian. People make mistakes every day. Some are minor, some major, some fatal. It's called "LIFE" and we all live it every day. This reminder, think about your actions, they ALL have consequences.
Tommy December 25, 2012 at 03:33 PM
WMS826 how's your boy Rush? You would be better served if you pulled away from here, get on the horn with him and chatted about life. Your better off with like minded people this way you can fill up. What gives your the right to stand in judgement of anyone?

It amazes me how people come on this site and blabber about tragedies and how each person who died has done wrong. Do we really need these comments? Are there really that many heartless souls who feel justified in pontificating about people when tragedy strikes? No s$&t this poor guy shouldn't have jumped over a median into traffic, he paid the price with his life and also I am sure impacted the person who hit him forever as well. For all of you jerks who feel the need to preach I offer Karma is out there and might serve you better to just offer your sadness and prayers to lives forever impacted. I guess for some there is some sick power feeding element behind talking crap about people on forums. I hope you don't reap the consequences of your cruel and insensitive comments some day. For me I just thought best to say a prayer for all impacted during this holiday season of lives changed forever.
Ann December 25, 2012 at 06:38 PM
Ashamed, beautifully said. I couldn't agree with you anymore. My prayers do out to all involved in this terrible accident. There are some people on this forum that are just heartless...about everything.
WMS826 December 25, 2012 at 07:19 PM
That is what makes me laugh about you libs, you are all about fair and inclusion except when people disagree with you. Then your hate comes out. This is America, free speech applies to all, including those who see things different. You very much would like to remove this right as did Chavez and Che your poster boys for the goverment of your choice. Until you steal our guns you will have to wait until you steal our goverment and rights.

Mark Story Jenks December 26, 2012 at 10:46 AM
Maybe it was a suicide. It happens very often with trains. Not too many train tracks in Brick these days, but we did have a Trolly car in the neighborhood. It is just another sad situation...
WMS826 December 26, 2012 at 02:44 PM
If it was suicide then shame on him. Please kill yourself alone and do not involve innocents and their insurance companies. Just get yourself to Bay Head or Point where the trains are.

I ride a bikeand walk, cause of tickets I have in North Carolina. I never have any problems crossing anywhere around here, you have to see every car and where it is headed. I dont know how anyone can be so stupid.Even if I was drunk I could cross safely. What do some people cross without looking or what. I value my life more.. Maybe it was one of our thousands of illegal mexicans. Either way its sad..RIP..
Mark December 27, 2012 at 12:22 AM
that's how roads are referred to ... a 2 lane road is 1 lane in each direction .. 4 lane road is 2 lanes of each direction and so on
