Pedestrian Dies After Hopping Barrier, Being Struck on Brick Blvd.

A pedestrian was struck and killed Sunday night near the intersection of Cedar Bridge Avenue and Brick Boulevard.

The accident took place at approximately 7:40 p.m., police said.

Brick Police Sgt. David Bedrosian said a man estimated to be in his mid 40s – who has not yet been identified – hopped over the concrete 'Jersey' barrier 30 feet south of the intersection.

At that time, Charles J. Gardner, 42, of Brick, was travelling southbound on Brick Boulevard in his 2011 Ford Escape SUV and had a green light, Bedrosian said.

The pedestrian, who was wearing dark clothing, was hit soon after hopping over the barrier into a lane of traffic. The impact threw the pedestrian about 140 feet, Bedrosian said.

Gardner came to a stop about 120 feet away from the accident.

The pedestrian was declared dead at the scene, and traffic on Brick Boulevard was diverted for about two hours.

Bedrosian and Officer Scott Dierking of the Brick Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit responded and are conducting the crash investigation. The identity of the pedestrian and cause of the crash are still pending further investigation.
