Pedestrian Killed After Being Struck Twice on Route 88

Robert F. Sheridan, 61, killed in crash, police say

Brick Police say a 61-year-old township man died after being hit by two vehicles Thursday night.

Robert F. Sheridan was first struck by a 2009 Ford Focus driven by John J. Gibbons, 79, of Toms River in the westbound lane of travel on Route 88, according to Sgt. Keith Reinhard. The accident occurred about 50 feet west of the intersection of Route 88 and Truman Drive around 10:21 p.m.

Police say the impact of the crash caused Sheridan to land in the eastbound lane of Route 88 where he was struck a second time by a 2009 Mercedes-Benz ML320 driven by Sally A. Rizzolo, 51, of Brick.

Sheridan sustained multiple injuries as a result of the crash, succumbing to his injuries at the scene, Reinhard said. Traffic was detoured around the crash scene for approximately three hours while police investigated the accident.

Brick Township Police Department EMS and MONOC paramedics responded to the scene.

No summonses have been issued in the matter. The crash is being investigated by Ptl. Jay Lampiasi and Sgt. David Bedrosian of the of the Brick Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit. Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to call the unit at 732-262-1140.
