Pedestrian Hospitalized After Being Struck On Herbertsville Road

Pedestrian walked into lane of roadway, police say

A pedestrian who walked into a lane of traffic on a dark section of Herbertsville Road was struck by a car and sent to a trauma center Sunday night, police said.

The pedestrian, whose name is not being released pending the notification of family, was struck at about 6:23 p.m. Sunday night about 275 feet north of Maple Avenue on Herbertsville Road.

According to Sgt. Henry Drew, Craig Greenhall, 44, of Brick, was driving his 2000 Honda Accord on Herbertsville Road when he encountered a pedestrian who stepped out of the shoulder into the roadway. Greenhall applied his brakes and made an "evasive maneuver" to avoid an accident, but ultimately struck the pedestrian, who was wearing dark colored clothing, said Drew.

The pedestrian was treated at the scene for injuries and transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, for treatment of multiple abrasions, fractures and head trauma.

The accident, according to Drew, happened in an area of Herbertsville Road that was described as a "dark, curved portion of the roadway."

Brick Police Ptl. Jay Lampiasi and Traffic Safety Officer Scott Dierking were investigating the case after responding to the scene, along with Det. Margentino of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, Vehicular Homicide Unit and Det. Frey of the Ocean County Sheriff's Department Criminal Investigation Unit.

Hebertsville Road in the area of the crash was closed to vehicular traffic for approximately two hours during the on-scene investigation, Drew said.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has information pertaining to the crash is being asked to contact Lampiasi at 732-262-1141.
