Massive Fire Consumes Seaside Heights Boardwalk, Funtown Pier

Thomas A. Mathis Bridge into Seaside Heights now reopened

A massive fire that broke out earlier this afternoon on the Seaside Park boardwalk is still not under control, Police Chief Francis Larkin told Channel 7 Eyewitness News several minutes ago.

Three blocks of boardwalk businesses and the Funtown Pier are destroyed and the flames have reached Dupont Avenue, Larkin told Channel 7.

Firefighters around the county are on the scene and are hampered by southerly winds blowing between 30 to 35 miles per hour.

"It's going to be a struggle, the way this wind is blowing," Larkin told Channel 7.
"We have probably every fire company in Ocean County.

The immediate boardwalk area has been evacuated and the fire is still not under control, he said.

"As of this time, nothing has stopped it," Larkin told Channel 7. "They (firefighters) starting to draft water from the bay."
