DWI Patrols to Continue Through New Years Day

An increased presence of police officers on township roads on the hunt for those driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol will continue through Jan. 2, police said.

Saturation patrols, among other stepped-up enforcement measures, are underway as part of the state's "Drive Sober Or Get Pulled Over" campaign, said Brick Police Sgt. David Bedrosian.

"Officers are scheduled at this time to work throughout the township during the crackdown period," Bedrosian said in an e-mail to Brick Patch.

Additionally, he said, Brick officers are participating in the "Cops in Shops" program, where police officers pose undercover as liquor store employees.

"Their mission will be to apprehend those individuals under the legal age who attempt to purchase alcohol and those adults that purchase alcohol for minors," said Bedrosian.

With regard to state highways, the New Jersey State Police also explained that they will be keeping watchful eyes on the conduct of motorists on the roads this holiday season.

“At the top of the New Jersey State Police’s 2011 holiday wish list is a safe and happy holiday season for the citizens of New Jersey. That includes a dramatic reduction in the traffic fatalities during the Christmas weekend period,” said the state police.

State Police reported that there will be a full complement of officers on patrol to respond to accidents and other emergencies, and to crack down on motorists who drive while intoxicated.

“Get a ride, plan to sleep over, or don’t drink to excess,” the state police commented.
