Cyclist, 81, Seriously Injured in Crash With Car

Vehicle was being driven by 88-year-old Brick man

An 81-year-old Howell man was injured after a car driven by an 88-year-old Brick man collided with his bicycle.

Joseph Schiano was brought to Jersey Shore University Medical Center with serious injuries after the crash, which occurred at approximately 10:21 a.m. Friday on Burnt Tavern Road.

Police say Anthony DeLuca, who was driving a 1995 Buick Regal, was travelling in the southbound lane of Burnt Tavern Road when he struck Schiano approximately 150 feet south of The Boulevard, the entrance to the Greenbriar I development.

Schiano had been travelling southbound in the marked shoulder, according to a statement from Brick Police Capt. John Rein.

The force of the impact caused Schiano to be thrown from his bicycle, landing on the southwest shoulder of the roadway approximately 24 feet south of initial impact, Rein said.

Schiano, who was not wearing a helmet when the accident occurred, suffered a compound fracture of the left leg and a severe laceration to the head, Rein said. He remains at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in stable condition.

The investigation into the crash is continuing, though Rein said it appears DeLuca left his travel lane and crossed into the shoulder, striking Schiano.

The right southbound lane of Burnt Tavern Road was closed due to the investigation for approximately 45 minutes.

Brick Police officers Chris Geskey and John Turrin were the initial responding officers to the scene. Officer Jay Lampiasi and Officer Scott Dierking of the Traffic Safety Unit are conducting the investigation. Assisting at the scene was Detective Steve Capaono from the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department, Criminal Investigation Unit.

In addition to police officers, Brick Police EMS and MONOC paramedics responded to the scene.
