Brick Woman Attempted to Run Over Security Following Mall Theft, Police Say

Charges stem from incident on January 16.

A Brick woman faces several charges from an incident at the Freehold Raceway Mall last week.

Shamera Whitfield, 20is charged with shoplifting for allegedly taking more than $500 worth of merchandise from several stores in the mall on January 16. She is then alleged to have attempted to hide the merchandise in green plastic bags that were put under a 2-year-old in a stroller.

After putting the items in the stroller Whitfield reportedly attempted to flee from the mall. She is charged with robbery as a result of the incident as well. Court papers indicate she attempted to use her vehicle against a uniformed mall security officer who was on foot and “ramming said vehicle into a marked mall security vehicle occupied by two uniformed all security officers.”

Whitfield is also charged with endangering the welfare of a child for her actions during the attempted theft. Whitfield is alleged to have been seen “tossing,” the 2-year-old into the back of her car with the other items she had stolen and driving recklessly in an attempt to leave the mall while the child was not wearing a proper safety restraint.

She also faces charges of committing an act or using a juvenile during the commission of the crime for using the child to hide the stolen items.

As a result of attempting to injure the officers with her car Whitfield is also charged with criminal aggravated assault. She is also charged with criminal mischief for causing more than $2000 worth of damages to the vehicles she hit while attempting to leave the scene.

okay, rereading it I see I did word it poorly from my perspective of only seeing this mall, or any Freehold mall, from the traffic lanes on Rt. 9 while I'm sitting in them the handful of times I've needed to attend a sporting event in the area - for that misdirection I apologize, but not for the intention of the comment

Guess she just kissed her baby goodbye. Baby goes to DYFUS, mom goes to jail. We pay either way!

How did she make it all the way to her car with a baby in the stroller, seems to me if they stopped her in the mall or when she walking out the door of the Mall there would have been no danger to the security or there vehicle or to her baby being put in the vehicle . You have to remember you were chasing a shop lifter with a baby in a carriage, how did she make it to the car and put a baby and a carriage in the car ? I think they could have got the license plate and had her stopped on the road instead of jeopardizing other peoples safety. How far behind her was this security? How many times have innocent people been injured in police chases, and so what if she stuck it in the baby carriage no difference in that then putting it in a large pocketbook or her coat. BUT THEY CALL THAT USING HER BABY TO COMMIT A CRIME MAYBE A CARRIAGE/Stroller not the baby, lets get real. Renee your probably right DYFUS would use that to take her child, with all the abuse cases going on I guess that makes her a bad mother for shoplifting, and security had no obligation to consider the situation, typical rent a cop.
