Sailor experienced trouble in heavy seas

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a sailor who became disoriened in heavy seas about five miles off Manasquan Inlet, the agency said Saturday morning.

Arthur Gingrich, 60, was aboard a 28-foot sailboat when he became disoriented in heavy seas around 6 p.m. Friday evening, according to a statement from Coast Guard Public Affairs Detachment Atlantic City. Gingrich radioed Coast Guard watchstanders reporting the 20-knot winds and 8-foot waves caused him to lose control of his boat, requiring the Coast Guard's help.

An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Atlantic City, arrived on scene and hoisted Gingrich into the helicopter and transported him back to the air station where he was transferred to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, Mainland Campus, in Pomona.
