Car, School Bus Crash, Sending 2 to Hospital

School bus collided with car Wednesday afternoon

Brick Police are investigating the cause of an accident involving a car that struck a township school bus Wednesday afternoon, sending two to the hospital.

The accident occurred at 2:22 p.m. at the intersection of Brick Boulevard and Beaverson Boulevard, according to Brick Police Capt. John Rein.

Rein said a 2011 Honda Accord was travelling southbound on Brick Blvd. when the driver, Louis Caccioppoli, 81, of Toms River, lost control of the vehicle as it approached the intersection. The Honda crossed over a concrete island and struck the school bus, which was stopped at a red light facing eastbound on Beaverson Blvd. The bus was occupied by 50 students that were just dismissed from Lake Riviera Middle school, Rein said.

Caccioppoli was treated at the scene by Brick Police EMS and MONOC Paramedics and transported to Ocean Medical Center. Students on the bus were evaluated by Brick Police EMS and one student, a 12 year old male, was also transported to Ocean Medical Center.

Police are investigating the possibility that Caccioppoli may have had a medical emergency prior to crash, Rein said.
