Brick Woman Charged With Assaulting Her 94-Year-Old Grandmother

Authorities: victim's granddaughter found drunk in her grandmother's kitchen

A 37-year-old Brick woman has been charged with assaulting her 94-year-old grandmother, authorities said.

Police were called to the Courtshire Drive residence of Mary Francis Driscol, 94, at 11:29 a.m. Sunday, at which point they found the woman semi-conscious lying on a bed, according to Al Della Fave, spokesman for the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.

Police and paramedics went to the residence after a friend of the woman's granddaughter, Katherine Schubert, 37, allowed Michele Schubert, the victim's daughter – who is also the suspect's mother – into the apartment where Driscol lived.

When they entered the apartment, Della Fave said, they found Katherine Schubert "highly intoxicated," sitting in the kitchen, and Driscol slumped over a bed in her bedroom.

Michele Schubert told authorities she last saw her mother on Friday before traveling back to her home in upstate New York, and was unable to reach either her mother or daughter on the phone over the weekend.

Driscol was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, with multiple injuries, including a brain bleed, blood shot eyes and multiple bruises and lacerations to the body, Della Fave said.

Katherine Schubert was taken to Ocean Medical Center for evaluation. She was subsequently charged with aggravated assault.

Bail was set at $150,000 cash.

The Brick Township Police Department, Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department are continuing the investigation into the motive for the assault, Della Fave said.
