Update: Brick Woman, 85, Killed in House Fire

Lit cigarette may be the cause, authorities believe

A township woman succumbed to her injuries Monday after being burnt in an accidental house fire Sunday night, police said.

Marilyn Rohan, 85, suffered severe burns after her clothing caught fire while she was in her Greenbriar I residence around 9:45 p.m. Sunday. She died Monday.

Rohan, of Baser Lane, activated a MediAlert device she wore after catching fire Sunday night around, according to Brick Police Capt. John Rein.

The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, Rein said, though authorities suspect a lit cigarette may have been to blame.

Rein said Rohan, after catching fire, was able to make her way toward the front foyer area of her home. At the time emergency responders were arriving at the home, a neighbor, George Bates, came to Rohan's aid by taking a blanket and smothering the flames, which were engulfing her clothing.

Rohan was treated at the scene by Brick Police EMS and MONOC paramedics. A medevac helicopter was called, but was unable to fly due to foul weather, and Rohan was transported by ambulance to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

The Laurelton and Herbertsville fire companies responded to the scene, as well as members of the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office and Ocean County Sheriff's Department.

Brick Fire Bureau Inspector Rich Orlando was also investigating.
