Brick Police Looking for Man Who Chased, Grabbed Jogger on Sawmill Bike Trail

Police still searching for suspect

Brick police are investigating a report of what could possibly be an attempted sexual assault on the Sawmill Bike Trail that occurred Thursday morning.

The bike trail runs through a wooded area that extends from Burnt Tavern Road to the township's Herbertsville section.

According to Sgt. Henry Drew, a female victim told police that she parked her vehicle in the Burnt Tavern parking area and entered the trail to take a jog. While running through the trail, she observed a white male wearing a dark blue hooded sweatshirt and dark pants standing off to the side of the trail.

Approximately a quarter-mile from the parking area, Drew said, the woman saw the man again and realized that he was chasing her. Eventually, the man caught up with the woman and grabbed her clothing.

"The victim was able to push the subject's hand away, and continue to the parking area of the trail," Drew said. "The victim lost sight of the suspect at the end of the trail, and was able to make it to her vehicle and leave the area."

After the woman called police, officers were dispatched to the area and began a search, however the suspect was not found. The investigation is ongoing.

The man is described as a white male, between the ages of 20 and 30, with a medium build, approx. 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-9. He was wearing a dark blue hooded sweatshirt and dark pants and standing off to the side of the trail. The sweatshirt's hood was pulled over his head.

Anyone who believes that they may have information that can assist with this investigation is being asked to contact Detective Gregory Mullarkey in the Brick Township Police Detective Bureau at 732-262-1122.  They can also contact the Brick Police directly at 732-262-1100.
