Brick Students, Police Bid Farewell to Retiring Crossing Guards

Silva Higgins and Karlan Hahn both served decades with Brick Township

The Brick Township Police Department is bidding farewell to two retiring school crossing guards who have served the township and protected its children for decades.

Silva Higgins and Karlan Hahn were congratulated Thursday on their retirement from the department. Higgins has been with the department for 33 years, starting in Sept. 1981. She has worked her entire career watching out for the children at Herbertsville School.

Hahn has been with the department for 28 years, starting in Dec. 1986.  Hahn has worked at several of the Brick Township Schools, serving the last 10 years watching over the children of Osbornville School.

The soon-to-be retired crossing guards were honored with signs outside several township schools on Thursday, and were wished the best of luck in a ceremony.

"The Brick Township Police Department and the children of Brick thank Silva and Karlan for their many years of service and wish them all the best in their retirement," Sgt. Henry Drew said.
