Brick Police Arrest NYers in Best Buy Fraud

Cops: woman tried to obtain false card while others drove away in van

Brick police have arrested three New York residents who they say participated in a plan to fraudulently obtain a Best Buy store credit card to purchase items they intended to bring back to their home state.

Officer Charles Kelly arrested Diana Hosten, 28, of Brooklyn, on Feb. 16 after loss prevention personnel at the store contacted police and told them the same woman had been identified earlier in the day after fraudulently obtaining a credit card at the electronic retailer's Howell location and purchasing items there, Sgt. Keith Reinhard said.

Kelly investigated and spoke with store employees and Hosten before making the arrest.

"It was determined that Hosten was attempting to acquire a Best Buy credit card fraudulently using a fake drivers license and Social Security number," said Reinhard, in a statement.

Kelly's investigation also determined that Hosten was not working alone, Reinhard said. Two other men were operating a tan-colored, four door van and might be attempting to head back to New York.

Officer Jay Nye spotted a van matching that description on Cedar Bridge Avenue, near the Garden State Parkway entrance, and stopped it, along with Officer George Williams, said Reinhard.

Police positively identified two suspects, Michael Maguet, 24, of Brooklyn, and Jonathan Edouard, 21, of Middle Island, N.Y.

Hosten, Maguet and Edouard were all charged with knowingly possessing a fraudulent license, forgery, uttering a false document, falsifying a credit application, credit card fraud, identity theft and conspiracy.

It was later determined that Hosten was not a U.S. resident and was in the country on an expired visa, said Reinhard. Officials notified United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement about her arrest.

All three had bail set at $75,000 cash and were sent to the Ocean County Jail in lieu on bail.

Great job by all the officers involved. Maybe the mayor will be giving those deserved officers, the key to the city, at the next awards dinner.

JudyBeck February 22, 2013 at 09:25 PM
Good job all around. We all pay for it when businesses and credit card companies are victims of fraud.

Revolution, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU??? What bail would you suggest? These individuals are stealing people's identities! and wreaking havoc on innocent people!

Too high?? The one is in our country illegally breaking the law! Not even working! If i were the judge I would not even have offered her bail but detained her till she could be deported. Get your paper work together and then lets talk how much bail is fair.

Having fake SS cards and trying to obtain fake licenses are frowned upon after 9/11. These crimes are no joke these days.
Walter Cunningham February 23, 2013 at 06:59 PM
Exactly. Set bail at $5000.00 and she'll never show up for court and be committing new crimes with the week.

For an illegal alien, trying to bilk the system and commit fraud and theft assisted by two cronies? NO!!
KC February 24, 2013 at 06:30 AM
Make that a double!
Revolution February 25, 2013 at 11:18 AM
all is ok with me. I have seen cases similar to these where the bail was much lower. It is not right that people steal other peoples identities.

Put them in orange overalls and have them work it off. I:ve personally littered between Van Zile and Jack Martin Blvd and it needs to be picked up!
