Brick Man Arrested in Overnight Stabbing

Argument may have led to assault, police say

A Brick man was arrested early Tuesday morning and charged with stabbing another township man earlier in the night.

Police responded to an emergency call at 10:05 p.m. Monday night reporting that a man had been beaten at 1448 Brentwood Avenue during an alleged argument, Brick Police Capt. John Rein said.

When police arrived at the scene, officers and medical personnel determined Richard Peal, a 33-year-old township resident, had suffered a severe stab wound to his abdomen as well as additional lacerations.

Peal was treated on scene by Brick Police EMS and MONOC paramedics and transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center by ambulance. The stab wounds are not being considered life-threatening, Rein said.

An investigation into the incident led to the arrest of Thomas Mitchell, 34, a Vista Court resident. Mitchell was arrested at about 3 a.m. after being located at his home, Rein said.

Mitchell has been charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon and possession of weapon for an unlawful purpose. Bail was set at $75,000 cash by Municipal Court Judge Robert LePore. Mitchell has been transported to the Ocean County Jail in lieu of bail.

The incident is still under investigation to determine what, exactly, led to the stabbing. Anyone with information on the incident is being asked to contact the Brick Township Police Investigative Division at 732-262-1120.

My first instinct is to take my family and run to another part of NJ or even better another state!!! Brick sure has changed in the last 5 years and certainly not for the better!!
Stewart Pidity July 17, 2012 at 09:11 PM
I've known Tommy since grammar school. It was evident even then that dead or in jail was the path he was on. 34 yrs. old, unemployed, still living with his parents. It's a stretch to blame Brick for this. Blame Tom.
Lee July 17, 2012 at 09:43 PM
Stewart, first of all you don't know all the fact. Noting was mention about Toms stab wounds that he received when jumped and look around at all the kids are back home living with parents.
Typical Obama Voter July 17, 2012 at 10:49 PM
@Lee...no, not all the "kids" are back home, living with the parents. Only the loser "kids" of the loser parents, are 34 years old and living at home. LOSERS... and 34 is not a KID..... they may be the sons and daughters of the parents but they are not kids or children at age 34. America is raising a generation of losers.
Typical Obama Voter July 17, 2012 at 10:51 PM
34 IS NOT A KID.....WAKE UP AMERICA.......you are raising a generation of LOSERS.
Supermama53 July 17, 2012 at 11:23 PM
I think we understand your point of america raising a generation of losers, but what you dont understand is that I am 23 years old, born and raised in Brick, and lived on my own for the past 5 years, so not "all" of america is raising a generation of losers. Get ur SH*T straight.

I beg to differ that Tom is a "nice kid" 34 really is not considered a child, in addition "he would never hurt a fly" is certainly a stretch. He is a very confrontational individual whom has been involved with illegal activities for an extensive amount of time. I am glad that his day has finally come and he is where he belongs...in jail. As they say every dog has his day! Brick will be a little bit safer tonight with one less criminal on the streets.
neicey July 18, 2012 at 06:13 AM
Tom is one of the nicest people I met. Always wants to help others but definately wont let anyone hurt him or his family. Find out what happened before you find him guilty. Its sad.

I beg to differ that Tom is a nice guy and would only hurt someone if he was provoked. He is a very confrontational individual in addition he has been involved with illegal activities for an extensive amount of time. I am glad that his day has finally come and he is now where he belongs in jail. While I'm sure his parents will bail him out every dog has his day! I'm just grateful that he finally had his. Brick will be a little bit safer with another criminal off the streets.
Youknowit July 18, 2012 at 08:29 PM
There's two sides to every story! Just saying! How come they only got one side?! I'm sure Tom was question at headquarters, so where is the story on that! He comes from a great family! How could you all sit here and talk bad about his parents when I'm sure you don't even know who they are! It's a shame cause you all sit here and place blame with your ignorance, but yet you wonder where "all the Brick kids" get it from!

It is not the town, school or families fault. These are grown MEN in their mid 30's not KIDS. They made choice and both them and their families are dealing with the consequence. One is in jail and the other is in the hospital. These were their choice and both are paying for it.

You are right Youknowwit!! We have known the family for some time and they are great people. People shoule shut there mouths so rest of the story can be told. Im so sick of people running there fr**ken lips before the facts are out!!!!

ulanda diaz July 19, 2012 at 01:33 AM
And are you mister perfect Stewart? You dont know what happened prior to all this...you DONT know that Tommy was attacked this is clear case of self defense. Before running your mouth educate yourself first. His being unemployed and living with parents has nothing what so ever to do with this. You should have a bit more respect for his family before running your mouth. Know the situation FIRSt dont always believe what you read there are always 2 sides to a story. Your comment is most certainly inappropriate. Should think before opening your mouth. Keep your ill thoughts to yourself on how you view Tommy. Your personal thoughts have nada to do with this.
ulanda diaz July 19, 2012 at 01:41 AM
Very disheartening to see such horrific comments being made. You all really need to educate yourself and know facts before assuming. Tommy was jumped and stab wounds as well. How is family was treated by the police is disgusting. REGARDLESS of bad moves Tommy may have made there are 2 sides to this story...one side printed other brushed under the rug. To judge someone simply by age and living at home is riciculous and says what kind of ppl you all are. His parents are the best ppl you'll meet. You should stop and think about what you say on here think about if it were reversed this was one of you alls family members...be considerate of Tommys parents. You dont know the whole story or how the "victim" taunts them. Find your manners and use them. Keep your personal thoughts of Tommy to yourselves out of respect for his parents.

Blogonthis July 19, 2012 at 02:27 AM
Of course there are two sides to every story however, Tom was the one arrested and I'm sure the police got both sides of the story. I also don't think that any of Tom's decisions have any merit in regards to what "type" of parents he has. Parents do the best they can and hope that they are providing their children with the essential skills they need to be successful adults. From what I know of Tom he is not a good person, he is not an upstanding citizen, and I am not surprised that he would be involved in this. He has not recently become unemployed with the economy crisis he has been unemployed for the better part of his "adult hood" and obviously isn't in need of seeking employment for what ever reason. I'm not asking anyone to agree I'm just stating my opinion from my perspective from my personal interactions and observations!
Herbasheik Rod July 19, 2012 at 03:20 AM
Of course anyone who knows this animal is going to find it inconceivable that he could do anything like this because we are obviously biased about people we know, so let's just talk about some facts. Fact, if both men were wielding weapons, that would be reported. According to these comments, Tom was unemployed, correct? That eliminates the possibility that he had a knife/box cutter/ razor/ whatever on his person at that hour for any other reason than with the intentions of using it as a weapon. People get into altercations all the time, sometimes regardless of age, social status, or town of residence, it turns physical. However, what separates this is deliberate use of a weapon. People are quick to jump to defend someone with clear criminal intentions but what about the family of the victim? Have a little respect. And if you believe engaging in an argument/fight warrants being savagely attacked with a weapon, I'm pretty sure we all would have wound up in intensive care at some point in our lives.
Anonymous Person July 19, 2012 at 02:43 PM
I have to disagree with Herbasheik Rod. From my understanding of the situation, some of the other comments made here are true. I've heard the weapon in question was used by the 'victim' on Tom and he then used it against the victim in self defense. It was not carried to the scene by Tom. The weapon found in his home was not the one used in the crime and may not even be owned by him, as other people live in the house. I agree that sometimes physical altercations happen and that may not be the intention at the start of the argument, but only have this story has been reported, and it was on the news within a few hours of the arrest, so there has been no chance for the other side to come out. And let's be honest, if the claims of self defense stated above are true, is the 'victim' going to admit to the police he attacked Tom first? I doubt it. At the end of the day, 2 people are going to have to live with the consequences of their actions. None of us were there, so it will be up to the jury to decide if they believe this was self defense or a premeditated attack with, as you said, 'clear criminal intentions'.
No name bitch June 15, 2013 at 03:58 AM
Both kids live at home. And Tommy dose do drugs but the pee test is always done by someone else. He has a temper that is so bad but both of the young noes are very nasty to there parents.
No name bitch June 15, 2013 at 04:01 AM
AGREE with above
Herb Everstints August 30, 2013 at 12:01 AM
Only the loser defendant still lives with his mommy. He has prior arrest record for drugs in 2010 and will be found guilty for his aggravated assault and weapons charges. He has since been arrested again for drug possession recently. What a low life. The is no article about his recent drug charges because he is probably snitching and doesn't have much of a choice. Lol. Bye bye loser boy.
Notbricktrash November 04, 2013 at 02:15 PM
Wow what losers mind your business get facts straight before running your mouth. The kids aren't nasty to the parents they care for them. Mother isn't well her daughter gave her life up to help her ailing mom. I'm not married and live in my parents house with my kid in my husbands and I bedroom. Get off your high horses most of brick is trash and so is everyone who has something nasty to say. He has 3 college degrees unlike most of you.
Notbricktrash November 04, 2013 at 02:21 PM
Not live in my parents house. My parents don't sleep in desperate rooms and my family doesn't have losers bunking in my house as well. Your just pissed cause we found out how fake you were and you have more drama then carter has liver pills. Our family members like us my mom didn't write a nasty letter telling us to F off that they can't stand you. Really stop talking crap and look at your family verses mine. Losers.
Notbricktrash November 04, 2013 at 02:35 PM
Herb shut your hole. He wasn't charged cause he was at the wrong place at the wrong time. He came clean on that one. Has nothing to do with tipping people off. It's fine to dislike him but keep off a public forum bashing a family. The one who says were nasty thru have dry humor. They are just jealous of my life my friends and everything else. Sorry but my mom don't hate me. My family sent wrote me out of the will. Want to get personal cause I will. Oh and I am not distingue looking to where my husband has to cheat on me! I look like a female not a man! So shut your mouth.
Notbricktrash November 04, 2013 at 02:36 PM
My family didn't write me out of the will I meant
Julia November 04, 2013 at 02:37 PM
People are always so quick to judge. There are always two sides to every story. This article is one side. I'm disgusted by some of the comments. Talking about his family is so wrong and distasteful. His family is so loving and caring. He made bad choices in life and god bless him but don't take it out on his family! The people who know tommy should pray for him to get better.
Notbricktrash November 04, 2013 at 02:38 PM
Agree Julia thank you
