Brick EMS Help Stage Car Versus Train Response Drill

Several of Point Pleasant's and Brick's emergency responders participated in a drill Sunday to train personnel in mass casualty response, including large-scale accidents with trains and multiple vehicles.

The training took place Nov. 17 at Allaire State Park, using the park's train to give participants experience rescuing victims off trains, and other scenarios staged as part of the drill, such as a car colliding with a train.

The training was attended by the Point Pleasant Borough Office of Emergency Management, Point Boro EMS, Point Pleasant Fire Department, Brick Township Volunteer EMS and Brick Police EMS.

Here is the complete post from Point Boro EMS:

The Point Pleasant Borough Office of Emergency Management in coordination with the Point Boro EMS and Point Pleasant Fire Department participated in a mass causality drill on Sunday November 17 at Allaire State Park. This drill put members of Point Pleasant Borough OEM, Point Boro EMS, Point Pleasant Fire Department, Brick Twp Volunteer EMS and Brick Township Police EMS to the test. The drill staged a multiple vehicle car accident versus a train.

The drill involved a total of 15 victims which EMS had to remove from vehicles or the train as the fire department has to ensure fire suppression on one vehicle which was "on fire" utilizing a smoke machine. The Point Boro EMS (ESU Unit) and Point Pleasant Fire Department also had to extricate several entrapped victims out of the vehicles. EMS had to appropriately treat all patients and OEM had to coordinate mutual aid repose to ensure prompt transport to medical centers, ensure enough emergency staff was on scene and assisted in unified command.

Although Point Pleasant Borough does hot have a train which runs through it the concept of a mass causality incident is always a possibility. The drill re-enforced key practices to all participants and emergency entities and gave the opportunity for inter-agency communication, command and coordination.

The drill was an overwhelming success and the Point Boro Emergency Medical Service looks forward to hosting some drills in the future. Special Thanks to Kim Welsh for being the photographer for the event, the Pine Creek Railroad for allowing use of their facility, Brick Township Volunteer EMS and Brick Township Police EMS (Special Operations Unit) and OEM Deputy Coordinator/Rescue Lieutenant Andrew Welsh for planning and organizing the drill.
