Brick Blvd. Accident Sends 2 to Hospital

One person suffered fractured spine

A Saturday afternoon accident sent two people to area hospitals, police said. One remains in critical condition.

The crash occurred on Brick Boulevard approximately 300 feet south of Pine Tree Drive, according to Brick Police Traffic Safety Officer Scott Dierking.

Dierking said Susan M. Graham, 79, of Riverdale, was waiting to pull out of Cameron's Scottish Food store when, for an unknown reason, she pulled her 2010 Toyota Sienna minivan into the path of 2011 Honda Accord being driven by Frances B. Braz, 89, of Lakewood.

Graham was transported to by Brick Police EMS. She was treated for a bruised left knee and released, Dierking said.

Braz was transported by Brick Police EMS and MONOC Paramedics to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, with a fractured spine. She remains there in critical but stable condition.

Brick Police Officers Robert Scelfo, Vincent Rosa and Special Police Officer John Kisch responded to assist with traffic.

Traffic Safety Officers Dierking and Jay Lampiasi are investigating the crash.

Any witnesses are asked to contact the traffic safety office at 732-262-1140.

No offence to the eldery but yeah its scarry sometimes seeing these people driving.

Dave, my thoughts exactly. Where are these 2 folks family members? Do they think it's still ok to drive at the age of 89 or 79 without a periodic DMV test, eye exam, etc?
Sometimes I feel that the families of people in this age group are equally responsible especially if they know that their parents or other family members don't drive very well. The "they fear losing their independence" comment doesn't hold water, especially if a life were to be lost. I hope Ms. Graham gets a driving test after this.

Maybe EVERYONE in Brick should get DMV tests every year ! No one here stops at stop signs or gives the right away to emergency trucks. I still see people talking on the phone, drinking coffee & one guy was reading a paper on the GSP doing 80 miles an hour !No one has any common sense any more .

Folks, what a slippery slope having lived through it. The day we took our Mother's car away at 80 was the day her depression set in. Once our Mom lost her mobility, she knew her days of freedom were gone forever....it took her years to get over it. We knew at the time that we couldn't endanger a new family or innocent teen by her lack of attention or bad judgment when driving. We lived close to her at the time and made the adjustment to bring her EVERYWHERE she had to go, but others are not so fortunate. Some children don't live close to their parents and can't make that same adjustment. God knows our Mom drove us around a ton when we were kids, now it was our turn to return the favor!
It's obvious that folks over the age of 75 should be retested every 12 -18 months to retain their driving privilege. Those of us who live close to the retirement developments have seen numerous 'close calls' over the years when it comes to older folks behind the wheel of a car. It's articles like this that bring back those tough memories, but it had to be done. But there is life after no more driving, our Mother is now 96 and lives on the first tee of a golf course in Florida and has more friends now than ever because she relies on so many people to get her around (and they don't mind doing it!). Those of use who are blessed with older parents eventually have to make that tough call, and when we do, we ALL have to make sacrifices for the safety of the public!

Their are some people in their 80's who play golf and drive better then some people much younger. So to say because someone reaches a certian point in their lives they become "dangerous". is unfair. I see more 17 yr old drivers or distracted drivers that I worry about. At least senior citizens were taught the right way to drive and stick with the rules of the road. It is unfortunate to see some older people failing as far as their reflexes and judgment but remember you will also become a senior someday and would you like to give up your license?
I think most seniors realize when it is time to quit and if they are making mistakes on the road the police will pull them over. My thinking is when I see someone with white hair that can barely see over the steering wheel while driving they just might be a World War ll veteran so take a deep breath and not be in a rush yourself.

Good point.....I never see the elderley texting or talking on a cell phone while driving :-)
Sophia Loyd March 11, 2012 at 06:18 pm
You are making a very BOLD statement. I highly doubt 100% of the population of Brick, even drives; I am also sure 100% of the drivers on the roads in Brick are not actually residents of Brick. So, before you try to make such a blanket statement--use your brain. Also, As for the guy on the PWKY, why don't you stop watching what other drivers are doing and pay attention to your own driving. Most accidents occur when the driver is distracted with something outside the car.. ie... an accident, a cop car, animal, or plainly staring at another driver.

The point of retesting at a set age is to objectively determine the difference between who can and can no longer drive. No different than determining who can and cannot drive at 17. The point is to improve traffic safety.

We assume a lot I think when we assume these people have family. Not everyone does! A lot of people are alone in our society. Sadly, many feel trapped into driving by a society that offers no real alternative in the way of mass transit. It still takes us two and a half hours to get to New York City for gosh sakes. You could be in Florida in that time. Not all seniors want to leave their homes and be relegated to what they percieve as seizure villages. It is a real problem.

I agree with quiet time. Def consideration of my neighbors if they have a sleeping baby or back yardRead More party. We surely try to respect that.

Funny Lelenore, I don't see that there are very many rules and regs. If it were elected it would notRead More be an infringement. I respect your opinion, but still feel six day time hours out of an entire week is not a lot to ask. If nothing else, would love to see a ban on gas leaf blowers. There are towns that have that in place. The mowers are not really IMHO that intrusive, but the leaf blowers and concrete cutters are another matter. Trouble is, people herebouts think they are in Montana and often are as you say, on 100 by 100 lots. What is the point of having all of this grass and trees if one never has the serenity about them to enjoy it? I think the ill effects of suburban noise pollution on health - blood pressure, aggression, release of the chemical cortisol etc. are well documented. Over a twenty five year period in time in Brick I find that this has become a real quality of life issue. At one point in my life I resided in mid town Manhattan and ya know what - being high up IT WAS QUIETER! Jackson? I don't think so. Doesn't Brielle have such an elective ordinance?

It was suppose to move next to the next liquor store behind Harbor Freight on Hooper. But,they neverRead More did.And when we pass it,it looks like they aren't even working on that side of the building. We miss that place for their deli dept.

They are waiting for the new store to get dirty and smell. It needs to be run down a little bit forRead More it to function properly.
can't say who June 19, 2013 at 05:44 pm
Right next to the liquor store. The reason it is taking so long is the politics of Acropolis andRead More Pat Botazzi. They kept the liquor store from opening for TWO years by controlling the planning board and caused the store owner HUNDREDS OF THOUSANS OF DOLLARES WITH COURT FIGHTS. Acropolis LOST THE COURT FIGHTS BUT CONTINUES TO BEAT UP ON THE LIQUOR STORE'S NEW TENNANT AS RETROBUTION Now Acropolis can play the code enforcement game and still get his happiness as a bigoted soon to be ex mayor and not a nice man. How about denying this. It is going to be a great store with the same owners and great food IF Acropolis doesn't have them go bankrupt due to him before they even open.
