Brick Barrier Island Access Moves Closer to 'Phase III'

Vehicle access to Brick's barrier island neighborhoods has moved closer to being a reality.

Registration for the so-called "Phase III" access plan - allowing residents to bring their vehicles onto the island during the day - began Sunday.

"In anticipation of our ability to permit resident vehicle traffic on the barrier island, the township will begin a resident vehicle registration program," the township said in a statement.

Barrier island residents will be given a sticker they must affix to their cars in order to gain access. Residents can go to the township municipal complex through Nov. 23, exclusing Thanksgiving Day, and obtain the stickers between 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Only one sticker will be issued per household. Vehicle registration plus proof of Brick Township home ownership in one of the island neighborhoods is required.

The access plan comes with several rules:

• A township supplied access sticker will be affixed to the resident’s vehicle on the windshield behind the rear view mirror.
• Only vehicles having been registered with the township will be permitted access to the barrier island.
• Residents and their vehicle will be permitted access to their homes seven days a week between the hours of 7:00 am and 4:00 pm.
• All residents and their vehicle must be off the island by 4:00 pm.
• Residents who are found in areas other than their neighborhoods may have their vehicle access privileges revoked.
• Residents are strongly encouraged to limit their visits to the barrier island due to ongoing construction, heavy traffic, etc.
• Residents should be cognizant of the construction workers, new traffic patterns, detours, etc.
• Contractors must have the completed contractor form which is to be filled out by the homeowner prior to the contractor entering the island.
• Residents will be permitted to drive off the barrier island a vehicle that is operational.
• A dusk to dawn curfew will be maintained on the barrier island.
• Rt. 35 will be opened for vehicle traffic throughout the day.
• Patrols will be increased in area neighborhoods and random checks will be made of persons found in these areas.
• Check points will be maintained from dusk to dawn and only emergency vehicles will be permitted onto the barrier island from Curtis Point to Ortley Beach.
• No persons will be permitted to remain in their homes after 4:00 PM.
• Residents will not be permitted to enter homes which have been deemed unsafe or condemned.
• Side roads which have been deemed unsafe will be blocked and vehicle access denied.
• Contractors/Insurance Adjusters must report to the VFW on Adamston Rd to check in with the required contractor form.
• Only one contractor/adjuster vehicle per household will be permitted island access.
• The contractor and up to two (2) helpers will be permitted per vehicle, all must present identification which will be held until their work is completed for the day.
• Contractors/adjusters will be issued a hang tag which must be displayed from the mirror. Hang tags will be collected at the VFW when the contactor identification is returned.
• Hang tags will contain the contractor name, date, work address and number of vehicle occupants.
• Resident vehicles will be permitted access only if a registration sticker is affixed to the vehicle windshield.
• Any contractor/resident found wandering outside of their respective neighborhood or in any area deemed unacceptable will be escorted from the island.
• Entry and egress will only be permitted via the north (Mantoloking side) of the island. No vehicles will be permitted to enter or exit from the south side of the island.
• Contractors violating these rules will be denied future access.
• Residents are strongly encouraged to limit their visits to the barrier island due to ongoing construction, heavy traffic, etc.
• Residents should be cognizant of the construction workers, new traffic patterns, detours, etc.
• Residents will be permitted to drive off the barrier island a vehicle that is operational.
• Boats can be removed via water or trailer but you must call the State Police Marine Service Division in Point Pleasant Boro at 732-899-5050 to make them aware that the boat is being transported.
• Generators must be turned off at night.
