The owner of a Brick Township auto repair shop subdued and held a man who stabbed him until police arrived, authorities said.

Brick Police were called to My Family Auto Care on Route 88 around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and found the store's owner had suffered a stab wound to the hand during an altercation with a man who he believed had stolen items from the business in the past.

But even after suffering a stab wound, the shop owner was able to subdue the suspect, identified as Steven K. Kalinich, 54, of Sawmill Road, and hold him until police arrived, according to Sgt. Henry Drew.

The shop owner, who was not identified by name, was treated on scene by Brick Police EMS and refused to be taken to a hospital, said Drew.

Kalinich was transported to Brick Township Police Headquarters where he was charged with third and second degree aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Ptl. James Albanese handled the initial call. Detectives Gregory Mullarkey and Daniel Waleski responded and took the investigation over at Brick Police Headquarters, Drew said. Anyone with additional information on the case is being asked to contact Mullarkey at 732-262-1122 or Waleski at 732-262-1170.  They can also contact the Brick Township Police Department directly at 732-262-1100.

So what part of the constitution did he go around. Obviously it hasn't been over turned by the supreme court so I guess it's constitutional. I didn't know you were a constitutional scholar and have over turned the Supreme Court decision of the Presidents overturning the Constitution. All you guys do is blow smoke up your own ass and destroy any credibility you thought you had. Oh, and BTW You had your chance in the last Presidential election and you'll get your chance in Nov of 2016. I keep telling you that you need to change the flavor of your KOOL AID.
grace February 01, 2014 at 01:59 PM
WOW thank you @ WMS826! put perfectly sir. this is off the topic re the brick business owner tho lol...i am certainly not the smartest person on here for sure, and ive been told that , but to me this is another part of the dems trying to clear the path for hillary...and her family..bill ,chelsea etc and lets not forget all their movie star friends
grace February 01, 2014 at 02:02 PM
@ not so dumb..we keep trying ...but in ocean county there are only a few who get to the top, and once they are there its til they die...
Mister Matt February 01, 2014 at 03:57 PM
It is completely idiotic to believe that the answer to our problem of shootings is to arm more people. Sadly, we are a gun culture with a gun problem. Arming every citizen won't prevent shootings, it will just escalate them with more innocent people being shot in the crossfire. To believe it will make our society safer is juvenile.
Mister Matt February 01, 2014 at 04:04 PM
Capital punishment does not prevent crime as those types of criminals either are to insane to understand the potential death penalty or believe that they will not get caught. In the Short Hills Mall scenario if the deceased was armed it in all likelihood it would not have prevented the altercation as the criminals would have believed they could 'get the drop' on the motorist. Other armed shoppers may have been able to engage the thugs in a shoot out but could not have stopped the motorist from being shot dead.
Mister Matt February 01, 2014 at 04:07 PM
Less weapons on our streets is the answer, not more. Only a fool would believe otherwise.
WMS826 February 01, 2014 at 06:15 PM
Than stay out of all the states that allow concealed carry....stay out of Florida???they are one of them.
Not So Dumb February 02, 2014 at 08:21 AM
WMS826, When are you moving to Florida? Or SC, or PA or any of those states that allow you boast that I have a gun and I fall asleep caressing the barrel and cradle my bullets. Here's a question for you, how many home invasions that end in the death of the home owner happen in the US? Now I'm sure you'll say that you don't know how to get that information without running to the NRA, but I'd point you to the Justice Dept to find out the answer. Good Luck it shouldn't take to much time to find the answer.
WMS826 February 02, 2014 at 01:56 PM
Why do you always fail to tell us the answer comrade. The security a weapon inside a home when lawfully owned and properly secured cannot be measured. No one sells guns like Comrade Obama, the amount of firearms sold under him is astounding. Google home invasion 2013 and see how many come up. Every dictator must disarm the public and create a secret police to keep the people down while they Destroy the country. Hitler did it,your hero Stalin did it! Mao killed fifty million Chinese, the Vietnamese, Cambodians killed hundreds of thousands plus any other genocide that happened in the 20th century. Google the subject concealed carry and look at the Wikipedia site for a quick overview of what most of the country is doing without mass killings as you misquote here comrade. You and your fellow travelers are in fear of people knowing this goes on in most states. Go dust Stalins picture off in your hallway and book your trip to North Korea, another peoples democrat country success.
Not So Dumb February 02, 2014 at 02:36 PM
Are you talking home invasion as property crime(burglary) or violent crime(murder/rape) make you remarks to the point if you can and stop blowing smoke up you ASS. Stick to the subject being discussed. And, if you look in the right places you'll find that in less than 100 home invasions in the US there is a death. I watched an interesting Gun Debate on C-SPAN from Stanford Univ. really made the Gun Rights lawyer uncomfortable dealing with the numbers published by gun groups. Their whole theme is to make people scared so they have to go buy a gun to protect themselves. And, listen if you don't know the real facts, that's OK just don't make them up because you loose any credibility you might have on any subject. Use facts from credible organization that can be checked for accuracy or post the link when you post them. BTW, who cares what other idiots did, they didn't do it here in the US. You waiting for them to come rescue you and your buddies and should I book you a seat for you to come with me to NK so you can protect me.
WMS826 February 02, 2014 at 02:55 PM
Typical communist move...when given facts put down who provided them and call the opponent names. Home invasion is not a burglary dope....home invasion means the people were home and the suspects knew it. Burglary is to an unoccupied dwelling or building. With the amount of guns sold these last five years comrade I would say you are in the minority as for your thinking. Provide us some hard facts to look at comrade that say you are correct. Otherwise it is just communist propaganda you spew. Show me one communist nation or dictatorship that allowed the public to be armed. Then tell me how good your political ideology is for us.

In the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program, violent crime is composed of four offenses: murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. Violent crimes are defined in the UCR Program as those offenses which involve force or threat of force. Secondly, In the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program, property crime includes the offenses of burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. The object of the theft-type offenses is the taking of money or property, but there is no force or threat of force against the victims. The property crime category includes arson because the offense involves the destruction of property; however, arson victims may be subjected to force. Because of limited participation and varying collection procedures by local law enforcement agencies, only limited data are available for arson. Arson statistics are included in trend, clearance, and arrest tables throughout Crime in the United States, but they are not included in any estimated volume data. The arson section in this report provides more information on that offense. BTW, the link to this info is http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2012/crime-in-the-u.s.-2012 Now Who's the dope. You might find statistics that prove your point if you know how to use them. Do you want an isle seat or a window seat for our trip to North Korea, should I get a seat for Rodman?
Brian February 02, 2014 at 04:13 PM
Listen, I don't own a gun. I do not like guns. I can see both sides of this above debate. But, you could bet your rear end, if I had a gun and someone broke in my house, they are leaving with a bullet or few in them and hopefully not alive. I don't care if it is a burglary without any intended harm, or a break in to harm myself or my family. I'm not willing to give them the time to find out. I'll deal with the repercussions afterward. Find a jury to convict a father of any wrong doing with 2 girls under 2 years of age and a wife. I'm sure 99% of legal gun owners aren't going out looking for trouble. Just like a police officer, I'd imagine that they hope they never have to use it against another human.
WMS826 February 02, 2014 at 08:41 PM
Please let me know how I can tell when the person kicking my door in knowing I am home intends to hurt me, or just tie us up and rob us. Does anyone remember that horrendous crime in Connecticut a few years back where they raped the women, tied the doctor to the pole in the basement, murdered the females and burned the house down with the doctor still inside. I bet every day he wished he could have did something to save his wife and daughter. I bet he sleeps each night with a firearm in the house and near by.
WMS826 February 02, 2014 at 09:09 PM
True evil exists out there. Please tell me why I should be subjected to it. Please tell us why it should be easier for people to prey on us without the bad guy having to think twice about encountering an armed citizen. Are you all able to fend off a 23 year old well built offender, and one armed with a knife, bat or other object.
Not So Dumb February 03, 2014 at 06:59 AM
How many home invasions have you stopped at your home? This is an easy one for you, all you have to do is answer with a number starting from 0.
WMS826 February 03, 2014 at 09:29 AM
Your anti American stance is not holding water here. It is the chicken or the egg at this point. Would more people do home invasions knowing no one had a legally owned firearm to fight back if need be is the question. Are legally owned firearms the reason why we do not have more of this. We will never know. I can tell you this, home invasions are on the rise nationwide. Part of this is drug related. Another part is culture. In some countries that type of behavior is quite common. As these people immigrate to our country they bring that type of crime common in their home nations to ours. We spent millions this weekend on the Super Bowl security which you and I will foot the bill for. If all is safe and sound in America then why bother with it.
Not So Dumb February 03, 2014 at 09:43 AM
WMS826, I don't need a lecture, all I asked for was a number. you know 0. 1. 2. 3 etc. Tell you what, I'll start to give you an idea on how it works. I have never (0 times) had to stop a home invasion where ever I lived, And, I've lived in NJ all my life both in Bergen, Monmouth and Ocean Counties. OK, now it's your turn and I'll type slow so you can understand what I'm asking. "How many times have you had to stop a home invasion with your gun?
Brian February 03, 2014 at 11:06 AM
NSD, it isn't about how many times you, myself, or he had to stop one. I don't own a gun, but I will wish I did if I ever am faced with that problem. I'm not calling you Anti American like WMS did. You have your opinion and the right to have it. So that is very American. There is no harm in having a legally registered weapon if you are responsible with it. He's comfortable having them in his home. It isn't for everyone.
WMS826 February 03, 2014 at 11:59 AM
This is the problem with you liberals, you cannot move past things that do not work. Do you have insurance....how many house fires have you had to need insurance...how many has it prevented. It's only when you have a fire that you really need it. Can your fire dept prevent any and all fires...no....no more than the police can prevent any and all crime.
Not So Dumb February 03, 2014 at 12:50 PM
Brian, Whenever there is a debate in any of these un moderated forums or comments sections on the internet you know when the other person starts calling you names he has no facts to support his argument and will continue to force his opinion on anyone who has an opposite opinion. Yes you're right we both have our own opinions and we both have a right to that opinion. But, every right we have also comes with responsibility. Gun owners, have a responsibility not only to keep themselves safe, but to keep others safe. That means to be a responsible gun owner you need to use it for its intended purpose safely. When not using it for it's intended purpose it should be stored safely out of harms way. Now, I don't know WMS826 and the impression from how he responds to posts, I feel he projects irresponsibility. I have no problems with gun owners, but I do have problems with gun owners that are irresponsible in their character. And, WMS826 I do have fire insurance and never had a fire, I also have medical insurance and have never needed it, I also have car insurance and never had an accident that was my fault or another drivers fault. So WMS286, answer this do you own a gun safe to store your guns, do you have gun owners insurance, do you store your guns in a place where your children do not know where they are? Of are you so paranoid that you carry your gun when you are locked up and trapped in your home waiting for someone to break in. WMS826, your typical reaction and those like you are a danger to society and your first thought is to solve all your problems with a gun, shoot first and ask questions later.
WMS826 February 03, 2014 at 03:35 PM
Look out...liberal on the ropes....yes, mine are in a safe where children never see me go. Yes I am a responsible gun owner. Your argument never had anything indicating you had no problem with responsible gun owners. If that is all true it is purely because you have been educated here. Please add the cost of this to your student loans for your philosophy degree as you sit there and hate America and wait for Obama to administer social justice and give you what the rest of us go out and work for everyday. Be careful..it is snowing and Birkenstocks are not really good for this weather. My health care just went up forty dollars this last minute it took me to reply. I'll just work some more hours while you keep the seats warm at Starbucks.
Not So Dumb February 03, 2014 at 04:25 PM

Another home invasion last night in East Windsor
Not So Dumb February 03, 2014 at 07:06 PM
No home invasions in Brick or Toms River last night or today so far! If you want to play your foolish games go right ahead. I only play games with my grandchildren and not little children.
WMS826 February 03, 2014 at 09:23 PM
They are happening all over the state now. I hope you rest easy knowing that rough men stand by ready to take action to keep you safe.
WMS826 February 04, 2014 at 02:47 PM
Saline County KS is now allowing its civilian county employees with concealed carry permits to carry while they are working for the county. Your local snow plow driver or court clerk could be armed.
grace February 05, 2014 at 09:58 AM
@wms826 having a small business in toms river this behavior with customers / employees is scary..time for hubby to start packin....never in my life was i an advocate for guns, my tune has changed
WMS826 February 05, 2014 at 03:43 PM
I agree...people in other states are allowed way more ability to protect themselves. Hope you stay safe and never need to use it..
Not So Dumb February 05, 2014 at 03:53 PM
WMS826, just curious how long does it take for you to get to your gun safe, open it and shoot someone invading tour home?
