An accident on the Beaver Dam Bridge that involved 12 cars claimed one life Friday morning, authorities confirmed.

The accident, which occurred just after 8:30 a.m. on the Brick side of the bridge, has forced the shutdown of both sides of the span as police continue to investigate. Police have not yet released the name of the person who died.

The bridge is expected to be closed at least another two hours, police said at about 12:30 p.m. Friday. Police have reopened the intersection of Princeton Avenue and Jordan Road, however.

Police told Patch 12 cars were involved in the accident, and some of the cars remain on the bridge waiting to be towed from the scene. In addition to the fatality, four other injuries were reported, none of which appeared life-threatening, said Brick Police Chief Nils R. Bergquist.

Bergquist said icy conditions on the bridge may have contributed to the cause of the accident, but that the cause is still being investigated.

The accident occurred as emergency crews throughout Ocean County were scrambling to respond to a plethora of accidents, most of which were attributable to extremely icy conditions brought on by freezing rain.

A woman at the scene was watching crews work to tow cars away and clear debris. She told Patch she had been driving a black Jeep, and was alone in her car, which was still on the bridge waiting to be cleared.

She said she had not been injured, but did not want to give her name. The woman, who said she was a local resident, was waiting on the bridge with her father and boyfriend.

Brick police, the Brick fire department, including a rig from the Laurelton fire company, and Lakewood police were all assisting at the scene.

Hard to believe this happened where it did, on this back road. But our infastructure is stretched to it's limits, as well as most of our citizens. This back road is a main drag now like so many others. It's just pure insanity. God bless the family of the lost. Just terrible...

Hey Ducey, you failure, How come the salters and sanders were not out on the roads in Brick early today? These accidents all over town are your fault. Don't you and the council know how to clear roads? Get with it. Acropolis would have had the salters out before the rush hour.

When will people learn to NOT get out of there car when they are involved in an accident. You stay put til the cops arrive. Unreal and tragic!!
TuesdaySunshine January 10, 2014 at 01:53 PM

Simon no one knew how icy it was going to get it was unexpected.
Ken January 10, 2014 at 01:54 PM
The roads were just fine until a little after 7am this morning. I left my home in Brick to head to Moorsetown to drop payroll off to one of my crews. Brick roads were fine at 6:15, Rt. 70 was fine. Once I hit RT 38 in Pemberton everything seemed to turn to ice in a matter of minutes. I slowly made it to my jobsite and stayed there until after 9:30. I must have seen 10 cars off the road in two miles. Barne Road just off Rt 38 was the worst, cars were just sliding sideways off the road hardly moving at all. This weather condition caught everyone by surprise.
Bunnie DeLancey January 10, 2014 at 01:55 PM
Terrible for all involved. The roads were icy this morning! Hurry up summer!
concernedmomof2 January 10, 2014 at 01:57 PM
Take a Xanax Connor
BW January 10, 2014 at 02:04 PM
Simon seriously, get back on your meds, my friend. 1st of all the weather service DID NOT predict this, so how was Duecy supposed to know? Maybe he should have consult Juan "there are no unforseen emergencies in the near future" Bellu
Glenn January 10, 2014 at 02:06 PM
So you like cure words Connor? How about you're a fucking asshole?
Andy Pat January 10, 2014 at 02:15 PM
Simon also shows his ignorance in that Princeton Ave and the Bridge are County Roads and as such his venom should be directed at the all republican Freeholders. But I think most see through his partisan propaganda.
YouSuck January 10, 2014 at 02:34 PM
@Andy Pat....Dufus, I said "accidents all over town" I never mentioned Princeton Ave, or the Bridge. As to your remark about the Republican County Freeholders, I did see county trucks out early this morning sanding and salting. Quite a few of them actually, and state trucks also.
mmuha January 10, 2014 at 03:48 PM
Isnt that Bridge manned? If so would he have known conditions on the bridge were bad and called the town to salt it?
Martin January 10, 2014 at 04:06 PM
The county, not the town... Vicari, not Ducey.... Republican, not Democrat.
Mortimer Snerd January 10, 2014 at 04:09 PM
When informed of the accident, Christie said, "I swear I didn't know that. I'm not to blame, but I'm sorry. I'll fire somebody."
BW January 10, 2014 at 04:15 PM
Seriously people, if you must blame someone maybe you should blame God, he is the one who created the weather, right Simon?
Andy Pat January 10, 2014 at 04:45 PM
So YOU saw County trucks but YOU did not see Twp. Ergo Republicans are great and Dems are no good. I guess you rest your case. Like I said I think most see through your partisan Bovine Scatology.
Andy Pat January 10, 2014 at 04:48 PM
And no I would not blame God. I do not think he would be so spiteful as to put ice on the bridge to see how his little creations would handle it.
BW January 10, 2014 at 04:54 PM
Sorry Andy was being sarcastic, because God was the only Democrat<wink wink> Simon didnt blame. I am sorry if I offended you, was not my intention.

What kind of jobs do you all have that are so vital to the economy and function of the USA that a few hours wait would have mattered. Turn around and go home, park somewhere and wait..get a coffee someplace for a few hours till it warms up as was expected.
Just saying January 10, 2014 at 05:44 PM
Simonsays your still a idiot !!
Lisa Arendt January 10, 2014 at 06:46 PM
why do peole argue over things like this? I was at work before 7 am, roads were fine. I was actually a bit baffled when I saw a truck salting rt 37 in toms river.....and there were still accidents an hour later. shit happens and yes, hospitals were jammed, community has 200 people jammed in there now
JG January 10, 2014 at 07:33 PM
I don't see any messages from a Connor ?, but it was slippery out don't think people realized how ba dit was until they got out in it.
Kathleen Thieme January 10, 2014 at 09:40 PM
Princeton Ave and that Bridge are County roads, not twp. roads, to salt. I pray for women and her family. My son drove to high school at 6:30am, the roads were fine. No one knew they were going to get this bad.
