Update: Drums Found Near VFW Building Did Not Contain Hazardous Substances

Drums were found early Tuesday afternoon

Authorities investigated the finding of three 55-gallon drums near the Brick VFW Hall at 373 Adamston Road Tuesday afternoon, prompting a response from a number of agencies due to the possibility that they contained a radioactive substance. No hazardous substances of any kind were found, however.

Brick Police Capt. John Rein said around 1:30 p.m. a person discovered the three drums near the VFW property that had markings indicating there may have been a radioactive substance inside.

Brick Police officers and firefighters from the Breton Woods and Pioneer Hose fire companies responded along with the township Office of Emergency Management, the Berkeley Hazmat Unit and representatives from the New Jersey State Police.

Authorities at the scene temporarily closed the Brick Township Senior Center while the drums were being investigated, Rein said. Though no hazardous substances were found, police are investigating how the drums made it onto the property.

"Although the drums were found to be harmless the coordination of response from all units worked well in addressing the suspicious containers as is the protocol for such events," Rein said.

Crews had left the scene by 3:45 p.m.
