Assault, Burglary Suspect Surrenders to Police

Edward L. Smith turned himself in overnight; is now being lodged in the Ocean County Jail

The Hamilton man wanted in connection with a during which police say he illegally entered his ex-girlfriend's apartent and threw a brick, injuring his own daughter, has surrendered to authorities in Monmouth County.

According to Brick Police Capt. John Rein, Edward L. Smith, 25, surrendered to Allentown police around midnight last night.

"Smith turned himself in after seeing his picture in the paper and on television newscasts," Rein said.

Brick police distributed Smith's photo on Tuesday.

The incident that sparked the search happened on Saturday night, when police say Smith violated a restraining order by entering his ex-girlfriend's apartment on Sawmill Road around 9 p.m.

When he was told to leave, Smith is suspected of throwing a brick through a sliding glass door of the apartment, which injured his three-year-old daugher who was inside. Police say he then stole his ex-girlfriend's 1996 Dodge Stratus and fled.

The car was later found in Lakewood near the home of one of Smith's relatives.

After turning himself in last night, Smith was transported back to Brick Township Police headquarters where he was interviewed and processed on the charges by Detective Robert Shepherd, Rein said.

He was then transported to the Ocean County Jail in lieu of $150,000 cash bail on charges of burglary, theft, criminal mischief, assault, endangering the welfare of a child and contempt of court for violating a final restraining order.
