Arrest Made in Machete Attack Near Mantoloking Bridge

Two New York men face assault charges

Authorities arrested two New York City men and charged them in a machete assault on the barrier island side of the Mantoloking Bridge Wednesday night.

According to Ocean County Prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford, eyewitnesses placed 911 calls at approximately 7:09 p.m. Wednesday reporting that an individual brandishing a machete-type weapon was involved in an altercation with other individuals near the intersection of Route 35 and Herbert Street in Mantoloking.

Based on a vehicle description given by the eyewitnesses, Mantoloking police stopped a blue Subaru with New York license plates and found a back seat passenger, identified as Michael Villanueva, 25, of New York City, with blood on his arms and clothing, Ford said.

Police later learned three people were being treated at CentraState Medical Center in Freehold for "slashing and penetrating wounds inflicted by a sharp weapon," Ford said.

An investigation revealed those individuals sustained their injuries during the altercation with Villanueva and the Subaru's driver, Lenin Herrera, 26, of the Harlem section of Manhattan, said Ford.

Both Villanueva and Herrera were charged with aggravated assault, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, the machete, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Bail for both men was set at $250,000 cash by Superior Court Judge Stephanie M. Wauters. Neither of the two men were listed as being inmates in the Ocean County or Monmouth County jails Thursday night, according to jail records.

Police are still investigating the incident, Ford said. Anyone with information on the alleged assault is being asked to call Detective Thomas Tiernan of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office at 732-929-2027 or Patrolman William Shewan of the Mantoloking Police Department at 732-892-0832.

I suggest mandatory swimming tests for all Bennies. If you are from Newark, Harlem, Patterson etc you get to take the test with lead boots.

12am PPB bar closing would keep most of the machete crowd away in the first place. Maybe theyre on to something after all.

Machete sale at Harbor Freight. Stock up @ $4.99, fight fire with fire. Sometimes a 2x4 is more affective. Maybe a large rock? Buckshot? Would a stand-your-ground law work here in NJ?

Welcome to the real world, Mantoloking.

I see Sarcasm is lost on both you and Vickie. Sad really.
KingNeptune June 22, 2012 at 04:38 PM
Yup, its a shame some around here are as sharp as string of cooked spagetti.
KingNeptune June 22, 2012 at 04:39 PM
And least anyone wonder, this incident was gang related.

This is where I say to myself "Who in the name of all that is holy, drives around with a machete?" I am sorry, but they sound like they are from New York by way of a South American jungle. We have it all right here in River City. Bennies and Pineys. God help the rest of us. Be careful, stay safe, stay smart - don't get into altercations and stay alive.

Mantoloking is just a glorified brick town, which inturm has turned into lakewood. So its no wonder... This isn't the first incident on that bridge, wasn't there a fatal hit and run years back when a cyclist was killed?
Stewart Pidity June 23, 2012 at 04:06 PM
Are the brand new taxpayer funded parks on the Brick side of the bridge ready for the onslaught of orthodox, tax devouring, cult members coming from Lakewood to take them over like they did our reservoir?
zipit June 23, 2012 at 08:40 PM
What are you talking about.... Ive lived in Brick for 15 years NEVER saw anyone walking around machete's... IF YOU read they where not from Brick NOR Did it happen in Brick...
zipit June 23, 2012 at 08:41 PM
@ Stewart well they will not be in any of " OUR" parks on Suturday & last I checked most parks are public Opened for anyone & everyone that wants to go....

It's time to revisit the concealed carry laws in New Jersey. We should all be allowed to defend ourselves against trash like this.
Pete June 24, 2012 at 12:21 PM
Art, I feel strongly that they should revisit the concealed carry laws in New Jersey. We should be able to defend ourselves against trash like this. Down South they carry guns and will use them if necessary, in situation like this. A town should be able to make their own rules to keep out the wrong visitors and if no one likes them. Do not come to visit.
M.O.D. June 24, 2012 at 02:06 PM
That's all well and good, but how would you like to be passing through a town where YOU were considered to be a "wrong visitor"? Did you not take History in school?
KMurray June 25, 2012 at 12:21 PM
Some of the people that visit this area are bad, and some of the people that live here are bad. This article is incomplete, and does not give details about where the people involved in this crime were coming from or going to. Every one assumes that they were bennies! I'm going to wait and see if more info is revealed, but this incident could be related to gang activity spilling in to this area from Lakewood. Reading the comments on these articles makes me ashamed to be a local! I would just like to state that not all people who live here are bigots. We don't all make decisions and judgments about fellow human beings based on whether a person was lucky enough to be born here!
Pete June 25, 2012 at 12:49 PM
M.O.D., Wrong person meaning a person who is causing trouble no matter where you are from. So I guess you were assuming too.
Pete June 25, 2012 at 12:56 PM
KMurray, I was refereeing to individuals who are visiting who are starting trouble. Not where you are from. I have to disagree with you... I have to say there is more bigots then you think living here. You should be ashamed to be a local because some do not even treat individuals nice or make them feel comfortable that have been living down here for years. I have read the hatred on other articles with the comments. According to some it is happening all over.... they get treated the same way when they go to another area, city, state, country or island.

First of all get your story straight ... the injured were in a car and were attached they are human beings regardless of their race. They mixed latin and medditerean but that is not a factor what give then the right to hurt someone so brutally regardless and they were not armed as where those crazy dominicans who think they are back home in the campo with chicken ok also were intoxicated and carrying illegal aweapons in the car guns machete? How to I know because these boys and their family thank you! so i got the info from the source........
MillieBGeronimo July 01, 2012 at 05:41 PM
oops regardless of the typos i hope people realize you cannot go around taking the law into your own hands. as in some other countries.... they should be deported back to the dominican republic.
Phineas J Whoopee July 02, 2012 at 10:32 AM
Vanessa, judging by your writing style, its no wonder your "bro's" were involved in this "attack"
