Margaret Lincoln Bates, Retired English Teacher, Presbyterian Church Elder

Margaret Lincoln Bates (Peggy), of Brick, NJ, passed away on Thursday, November 14, 2013, at Brandywine Gables in Brick.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, she grew up in Daytona Beach and lived many years in Sea Girt before moving to Brick 15 years ago.

A collateral descendent of President Abraham Lincoln, she earned her B.A. degree from the University of North Carolina, and her M.A. from Fairleigh Dickinson. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

She was active in her church and community. An elder and lay pastor at Manasquan Presbyterian Church, she also served for many years on the Monmouth Presbytery Council. She was a moderator of her local Presbyterian Women and also a moderator of Presbyterian Women of Monmouth.

She served as president of Sea Girt Woman's Club for two terms and as regent of Governor William Livingston Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution. Her colonial ancestor was Stephen Lincoln of Petersham, Mass. She was a member of Holly Club and Greenbriar Kiwanis Club.

Her husband, Thomas Edward Bates, predeceased her, as well as her daughter, Ann Lincoln Bates. Her sons, Thomas Lincoln Bates and his wife Barbara, and Jeffrey Vinson Bates and his wife Sally, survive her. Six grandchildren: Mark, Virginia Jorgensen, Thomas, Richard, Sean, and Kathleen Ann Cascio and six great-grandchildren: Lacey, Holly, Madeleine Margaret, Gabriel Thomas, and William and Kenny. Also surviving is one sister Ruth Kaye of Alexandria, VA and several nieces and nephews.

 A memorial service will be held at the Manasquan Presbyterian Church, 16 Virginia Ave., Manasquan, NJ on Saturday, November 23, 2013, at 10 am. Colonial Funeral Home, Brick, is in charge of arrangements. Donations in Peggy's name can be made to either the Manasquan Presbyterian Church or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of NJ, 14 Commerce Drive, Suite 301, Cranford, NJ 07016.
