Brick Officials Urge: Change Clocks, Change Batteries

"Change you clocks, change your batteries" this weekend

The end of daylight savings time comes Saturday night. As usual, local officials are reminding residents to change their smoke detector batteries when they change their clocks.

The Brick Township Bureau of Fire Safety has made such a request, and residents are invited to pick up free nine volt batteries, the traditional battery type that smoke detectors take, on Saturday at two locations in town. The batteries will be distributed beginning at 10 a.m. at the Home Depot on Route 88 and the Lowes on Route 70 while supplies last.

State officials also joined the chorus of those urging folks to change their batteries as they "fall back" this weekend.

"Making a habit of changing those batteries as we wind our clocks back is an excellent way to keep these important protection devices in working order. Having a working smoke alarm doubles a family’s chance of escaping a home fire," said Lori Griffa, the state Department of Community Affairs commissioner.

Daylight Savings Time ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday. So before hitting the hay on Saturday night, remember to set the clocks in your home one hour back. Computers and cell phone clocks normally "fall back" on their own.
