Many Sandy-Affected Business Owners Still Waiting For Grants

Part of the problem lies in HUD requirements for documenting and qualifying grant applications, state senator says


In the weeks racing around helping others after superstorm Sandy, Keansburg firefighter Christopher Madden had little time to tend to his restaurant Charlie’s Place, where seven feet of water destroyed a new kitchen and left the upstairs apartments uninhabitable, according to a report in the Asbury Park Press.

When he found out about government aid programs, “I spent about $7,000 trying to get grants” by hiring people to compile the financial documents he needed, Madden said. Seven thousand dollars for nothing — so far.
