HOW TO ROCK YOUR RESOLUTIONS

For some, “resolutions” is simply another word for goals, which may change annually based on the previous year’s successes or failures. For others, resolutions are bold acts of will designed to mobilize the yearning for a better life. Either way, I recommend making resolutions your new reality by keeping an eye out for pitfalls and integrating a fun fitness program into your everyday life.

Watch for Resolution Wreckers
•  Success of self-promises, a common ritual evoked at the beginning of each new year, is based on self-respect. The more we like ourselves, the more likely we’ll keep that healthy promise to lose weight, eat better or exercise more. The healthier we are, the more self-respect we have.
•  Fear of failure, success, attention, or judgment leads to resistance, which can wreck your resolution before you even begin. In The War of Art, Steve Pressfield writes, “Resistance is not a peripheral opponent. Resistance arises from within. It is self-generated and self-perpetuated. Resistance is the enemy within.” In other words, feel the fear but do it anyway.
•  Have fun! Being overly serious induces bouts of self-criticism, which will douse your dreams in a nanosecond. As we grow older, we believe playtime is for kids, but studies indicate that adult play boosts the chances of achieving your goals.

Rock Your Resolutions
•  “I feel keeping a promise to yourself is a direct reflection of the love you have for yourself,” writes Steve Maraboli in Life, the Truth, and Being Free. “I used to make promises to myself and find them easy to break. Today, I love myself enough to not only make a promise to myself, but I also love myself enough to keep that promise.”
•  The key to resisting resistance is noticing it’s there and moving forward. Instead of seeing your resolutions as something you have to give up, think of what you’ll gain.
•  Play evokes the honest, creative, and innovative responses, moving people into an accessible, neutral space. Brainstorm how you can make your goals fun. If you want to save money, make dinner with your family instead of eating out. If you’d like to learn how to eat better, take a cooking class.
•  If you’re goal is to lose weight, social dancing is an exceptional form of play. The music, exercise, and community will put a smile in your heart and a smaller dress size in your closet.
