Congress

Chapter 2

Earlier today, I heard a caller to C-Span claim that Congress passes a Bill and the Senate blocks it.  How many realize this is semantically incorrect.  It is the House of Representatives – the People’s House – which has passed many Bills and Harry Reid and/or the Senate block them.  I wonder how many people reading this understand what I have written

“The House is one of Congress's two chambers (the other is the U.S. Senate), and part of the federal government's legislative branch. The number of voting representatives in the House is fixed by law at no more than 435, proportionally representing the population of the 50 states.”  In case anyone does not know it the Senate consists of 100 Senators – two from each State of the Union.  The District of Columbia (DC) has a Delegate usually addressed as Congressman/woman as in “Congresswoman Eleanor Norton Holmes.”   Despite many efforts over the years this Delegate has no vote on Legislation.

I entered the workforce immediately after graduating from High School.  After a buyout in 1994 I matriculated at a NYC Community College.  What an eye opener as to the awful state of education of students.  The Political Science Professor asked how many members of Congress there are.  I was the only student who knew that the Senate was part of Congress.  I shudder to think about the lack of knowledge in the curricula today.  And these are today’s Politicians.  In the future it will only get worse unless more people demand their rights, get out to meetings of public bodies especially, School Board Meetings.
