A sous chef is responsible to manage the entire kitchen staff whenever the executive chef is absent or handling something else. It’s the sous chef’s responsibility to carry out executive tasks, prepare daily specials, examine the food and order necessary ingredients. Requirements in Term of Education

Sous chefs must complete their formal culinary education after earning their high school degree or GED. Various culinary arts schools offer extensive Associate’s and Bachelor’s degree programs for aspiring chefs worldwide. These programs generally last from 2 to 4 years and often include courses in sanitation, safety, food preparation, food purchasing and baking techniques.

Additionally, students are required to complete lectures in traditional classrooms as well as hands-on, skills classes in a lab kitchen.

Most of these Sous Chef programs require a combination of formal education with proper practical knowledge and work experience to advance in the culinary field. The Advanced Certification

For a demanding position students may be required to demonstrate their ability to do well on the job through a combination of certification, skills demonstration from previous employment, and a specified number of hour of coursework. According to ACF, candidates are required to have relevant experience of 5 years in the industry, a high school diploma and approx 50 hours of coursework to hold advanced standing. Students who have earned their degree in culinary arts can gain proper hands-on experience by actively participating in various apprenticeship programs. Various accredited colleges help students to seek better internships sponsored by ACF of 2-3 years; these involve baking, soups, sauces and vegetables. Internships allow graduates to hone their skills and become familiar with the hectic pace and high demands of a professional kitchen.

Gain Proper Experience

It’s important to provide all the documents of your valid experience if you want to earn your initial certification. The advanced level of certification will require graduates to present both culinary and supervisory experience.
