A Career of Comfort and Social Service - Become a Phlebotomy Technician

The medical field is considered to be the second place, after the armed forces, where people directly serve their society and nation.

The medical field is considered to be the second place, after the armed forces, where people directly serve their society and nation.  No other job can match the self-satisfaction and earning potential it provides. Apart from being doctors, surgeons and nurses, there are many things one can do in the medical field and be a part of this team. Phlebotomy is one such occupation in the health industry that is readily learned at phlebotomy schools. Assisting doctors and nurses, to maintain the smooth flow of processes and treatments for patients either during an operation or just at a regular check up, is no easy task. Phlebotomy technicians take their job (taking blood samples) seriously to enhance the team process and promote the best health maintenance or recovery for their patient.

Phlebotomy - As a profession

If you don’t shy away from working with needles while taking vials of blood then this could be a medical position you could prosper in.  There are many phlebotomy-training programs that will make you knowledgeable in the ways and methods of this field. After these courses are completed, graduates receive the certification that is required by almost every private clinic and hospital.

Consider the requirements of this job though; stamina to work for long hours and the ability to work flexible hours. You should also have good communication skills as you will work with patients and medical colleagues and must be able to communicate quickly and in a positive manner. This is an advantage because this can be used to reduce the fear or state of confusion in the minds of patients coming to get their blood drawn for testing. Strength in stamina is important but also physical ability to do things such as lift patients may be required.

Knowing about color codes, chemicals to prevent blood clotting, locating the right vein to draw the blood from and the correct amount are just some of the things that a phlebotomist does. Sometimes you might even be testing bodily fluids other than blood.

Some believe that phlebotomy can be pursued without any formal training, such as phlebotomy training schools, but getting certified and trained certainly will help in getting a position in a good hospital. Experience is something that every hospital, clinic or blood bank, will look for and coming prepared with formal training can be the difference between getting the position or not.

Phlebotomy - As a career prospect

With the number of people going to hospitals increasing every year, the need for more professionals in the health industry has increased.  This increases the need for, and positions available to phlebotomists.  However, as with all positions, those with the proper training and certifications will be the first to be selected, and obtain higher salaries.

Many begin their medical training in Phlebotomy but soon choose to add on training, making them more useful and increasing their salaries even more. Whether you choose to remain a phlebotomist, or add on to your training, if you are looking to start a career in Phlebotomy, it could go a long way to providing you with comfort and good pay!
