UPDATE: Short Stretch of Normandy Beach To Reopen

Emergency declaration amended by township.

Eighth Avenue south to Sixth Avenue, in the Normandy Beach section, will reopen to the public as of this weekend, officials said.

“I have heard and understand our resident’s desire to access and enjoy the beaches this summer,” said Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis in a prepared statement. “Our professionals have been monitoring the hazards, from coastal conditions to the potential for debris, and we are confident that this section of Normandy Beach can be safely enjoyed as long as residents remain cautious.”

Dune fencing and clear signage will be posted to help residents avoid hazards, according to Police Chief Nils Bergquist.

“The dunes are unsafe and completely off limits, except at the 8th Avenue access point,” said Chief Bergquist. “No one will be permitted on the beach from Brick Beach III south to 8th Avenue in Normandy Beach because of dangerous conditions, including ongoing home demolitions, construction and beach replenishment work.”

The beaches were closed by emergency declaration following superstorm Sandy, and town officials as of today had amended that declaration for the Normandy beach area.
