Route 88 Resurfacing Project Begins

Project will stretch from Folsom Drive in Brick to New Hampshire Avenue in Lakewood

A project that will see the resurfacing of nearly the entire stretch of Route 88 through Brick has begun, according to state officials.

The state Department of Transportation (DOT) announced Monday that workers employed by Joseph DeFino Contracting will immediately start shoulder closures and install advance construction signage and fencing. The initial stage of construction involves work off the mainline highway and will not impact traffic, DOT representatives said in a statement.

The $3.8 million project will resurface Route 88 in both directions from Folsom Drive, just west of Midstreams Road, in Brick to New Hampshire Avenue in Lakewood. The 4.5 mile stretch of the state highway will be repaved with asphalt and intersections will be refitted with traffic-sensing cameras to replace existing, underground loop detectors. The cameras are linked to traffic signals and detect vehicles waiting to enter or cross the road and activate a signal sequence. State officials said Monday that the new cameras will help manage the traffic capacity of the roadway.

Officials with the DOT said resurfacing construction would begin in late April and be completed in the fall.

Work requiring lane closures will be performed at night in order to minimize traffic impacts on Route 88, according to a DOT statement, and all travel lanes on the highway will be maintained during daytime hours, though traffic shifts may be necessary.  During the summer months, construction restrictions will be in place prohibiting any lane closures on weekends.

“Resurfacing projects are a priority for the Department because they improve public safety and help maintain our roadways in a state of good repair,” NJDOT Commissioner James Simpson said in the statement.

The project will come with some additional perks, as well.

DeFino will make surface repairs to the Route 88 bridge decks over the Metedeconk River and install upgraded curbing, roadway striping and guide rails throughout the project limits.
