Mantoloking Bridge Apparently Not Damaged, But Closed for Inspection and Debris Cleanup

Police call report that house struck bridge an "area of interest"

A house near Barnegat Bay in Mantoloking dislodged from its foundation but apparently caused no significant damage to the Mantoloking Bridge after it reportedly struck the span, police said.

Police said they're investigating, but cannot access the barrier island side of the bridge due to flooding caused by the ocean meeting the bay near the span, said Sgt. Keith Reinhard of the Brick Police.

There were confirmed reports of houses and boats that had floated up to the bridge and remain there. One house was apparently situated on top of the span.

The bridge will be closed indefinitely pending an inspection and cleanup.

Thought it might be the house next to the bridge that they renovated.
Jennifer Messina October 30, 2012 at 01:48 am
since my email subject said a house did not strike the bride and the actual report says it's not confirmed or denied, um, what the heck is going on???? don't send out stuff that isn't confirmed. as journalists, you should know better.

Our worst enemies...and its not the hurricane!
John doe October 30, 2012 at 02:05 am
The bridge is STILL there. A house is on top of the bridge and another house floating around in the water. Theirs pieces of house basically flying around out there. The bridge is still in tact, ocean county personel just can't get on to the bridge

I don't think any of us can comprehend the devastation of this storm...and only a cat 1 hurricane. We have been warned of this for many, many years. When our Gov Christie takes his Helio flight tomorrow and the media gets out there, no one will believe what has happened! Insurance? Oh boy, in this state...we all better leave now!

Wishing you all safety, minimal damage, no injuries or worse, and a good night's sleep soon. I left Tom's River 45 years ago (dad was Navy stationed at Lakehurst) as a little girl and TR hosts my first memories. Always proud to say I lived there (Go West Dover Elementary!).
