Parkway's Exit 91 Slated for Some Upgrades

The Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders this week unanimously approved an ordinance authorizing $30,500,000 in bonds or bond anticipation notes to improve the Garden State Parkway Interchange 91.

County Engineer Frank S. Scarantino told Patch after the Freeholders meeting on Tuesday that the appropriation will reconstruct all four corners of Burnt Tavern Road, as "congestion management is needed."

Scarantino said the interchange gets very backed up during morning and evening rush hours, and these improvements are designed to "make it more accessible" from all directions.

It is expected the project will go out for bid in November, and construction will be started sometime in January 2014.

The project will largely be federally funded, but county officials must first approve the appropriations and the funds will be reimbursed through the Federal Highway Administration and the New Jersey Turnpike Authority.

The Turnpike Authority is also restoring full-width shoulders and travel lanes between mileposts 83 and 100 in Ocean and Monmouth counties.
