'Angel in Anguish' at Windward Beach

Sculpture commemorates those lost in Sept. 11 attacks

Lilian Finlay of Brick recently brought a rosary to the Angel In Anguish sculpture that was erected at , a public beach overlooking a winding river that flows to Barnegat Bay and, eventually, the ocean.

The sculpture commemorates those residents of Brick who died in the Sept. 11 attacks by depicting an angel falling in tears atop the twin towers of the World Trade Center, which were destroyed in the attack. The sculpture, which serves as a foreground to daily sunsets over the water, includes the names of local victims of the attack inscribed at the base of the memorial.

Finlay said she lives close by and often comes to the sculpture to pray. She said she also came to the sculpture following the on May 1, 2011.
