Would You Miss the Brick K-Mart if it Closed?

Store's parent company will be closing more than 100 stores

There's no word yet as to whether the Brick K-Mart store is one of over 100 locations that the company will close in the near future.

Sears, K-Mart's parent company, announced Tuesday that thanks to a poor holiday sales season, more than 100 underperforming stores would close their doors in 2012. The company maintains one location in Brick, in the Laurel Square shopping plaza between state routes 70 and 88, next to the Pathmark supermarket.

A press release issued by the company said during the fourth quarter and during 2011 both the K-Mart and Sears brands lost money. That loss is being attributed to "decreases in the consumer electronics and apparel categories," according to the release. Another contributing factor was a drop in sales of "consumer electronics and home appliance categories." The sales of items like apparel were also flat which did not help the company's situation.

By closing the stores, the company estimates it will generate $140 to $170 million in cash by selling the inventories of the stores. Chief Executive Officer Lou D'Ambrosio D'Ambrosio said the changes should benefit the customers and the company.

"These actions will enable us to focus our investments on serving our customers and members through integrated retail - at the store, online and in the home," he said.
