Red Lion Liquor License Transferred to Chain

Joe's Crab Shack will move into Brick Plaza

The liquor license held by the former Red Lion Inn on Drum Point Road has now been transferred to Crab Addison, Inc., which will utilize it in the operation of a chain seafood restaurant planned for Brick Plaza.

In September, the township planning board approved an application by Joe's Crab Shack to construct a new restaurant in the shopping complex.

The 8,600 square foot restaurant will be located where the former FedEx-Kinko's store was located in the rear of the plaza in a stand-alone building, said Township Planner Mike Fowler at the time.

The building that formerly housed FedEx-Kinko's will be demolished, Fowler said.

The restaurant will feature, in addition to its indoor dining room, an outdoor "pirate ship" themed play area for kids.

The Red Lion, a historic bar and restaurant in Brick, shut its doors in Jan. 2012, and has since been demolished and replaced by a CVS pharmacy.

Historical records show the former Red Lion was built in 1926. According to the book "Images of America - Brick Township," the restaurant was founded by Joseph and Phyllis McClorry, who ran it until 1957, when it became Citta’s Red Lion Tavern. The Bottazzi family had owned it since 1977.

As for the new holder of its liquor license: There are 127 Joe Crab's Shack locations nationwide. The Brick location will be the chain's fifth in New Jersey. Other restaurants are located in Eatontown, Lawrenceville, Clifton and South Plainfield.

I just wish they didn't take down the Red Lion. Would have been better if someone else bought and took over that restaurant. CVS across from Walgreen's.....hmmmm necessary?

Another garbage chain in Brick, big surprise!
knarfie January 23, 2013 at 12:42 pm
Actually a pretty good place to eat, Where did you go to think it was "garbage"?

No but a successful business model used around the country by many companies. fast food restaurants, gas staions, banks, and car dealers. The planning boards can't stop the type of business discriminantly. It can only deal with land use and site issues.

I saw a sign for the opening of a new liquor store in Lake Riviera strip mall on Brick Blvd. What license is that?
Slippery Slope January 23, 2013 at 01:28 pm
The Red Lion was a Crab Shack and a Drug Store rolled into one . It was also a Crack House, a Pill dispensary, a massage parlor, a smoke house and a tooth brushers anonymous meeting place. You could go to the Red and get alcohol, drugs, a nice "young lady" and the crabs all at one stop shopping. Now thats a strip mall.

"The restaurant will feature, in addition to its indoor dining room, an outdoor "pirate ship" themed play area for kids." I just hope the parents enjoying the benefits of that liquor license remember where the kids are when they get up after having a few brewskis and leave.... ;)

Hey Slippery Slope...Are you waxing poetically about the loss of your favorite hangout and personal choices?
Jerry Belle January 23, 2013 at 01:59 pm
They're leaving Brick anyway, why do they care....
knarfie January 23, 2013 at 02:04 pm
I don't know if it was all you described, but it did go from a nice family place to a dump of a hangout.
iCanoe2 January 23, 2013 at 03:47 pm
I believe that is where the liquor store that is currently located next to Shop Rite is moving to.

The Red Lion WAS a good place for food and a few drinks, during the past few years it went down hill. Pat Bottazzi ran a good show, when the the boys took over it was a downhill slide.
Andy Pat January 23, 2013 at 04:16 pm
The "Red" was a dump. And Bottazzi (former councilman; former Mayoral candidate; and longtime BTMUA commissioner) did little to improve the place in his 30 plus year's of (mis)management. Word has it he was in a bad financial position and forced to "sell out". I wonder if his business sense was this good when he was making multi-million dollar decisions regarding us taxpayers. Scary, huh?

Why knock the building down?! Why not leave it as it stands & work around what's their?!!

I loved the Joe's Crab Shack TV commercials, then I went to the Eatontown location. High prices, small portions, and everything (the crab legs, shrimp and my lobster tail) was overcooked/overnuked. I will NOT be going back.
Save your money don't eat there. You'll thank me later.

Another liquor license and chain restaurant in Brick Plaza. Just what the plaza needed.

I love all the complaining. Waaaaa. Who cares. Open up your own business. we don't need jobs around here. Everyone is doing great!

People love to go out and eat in Brick. Tried getting into Quaker State a couple of weekends ago and it was an hour wait. I say bring it on. We need it. Otherwise, it's just an empty, unused building.
kelly dubois January 26, 2013 at 10:57 pm
You people are all idiots! Brick blows, you people dnt know food , so you fit the demographics for big chains, ignorant. Red lion was about as savory as enzos pizzas septic tank. I'm glad the red lion n that wormy slimy owner is gone. I dnt know what else to say but buy local, support mom n pop places. And penne vodka is not Italian food!

I agree. I didn't like it as soon as I walked into it. The noise was deafening. Should have turned around and walked right out. All of those chains, Oil & Lube, Buffalo wild wings and Joe's crab shack are way too loud and the food only just so so, however, Oil & Lube does have a wonderful burger.. but get it to go.

I agree with quiet time. Def consideration of my neighbors if they have a sleeping baby or back yardRead More party. We surely try to respect that.
KC June 19, 2013 at 04:55 pm
Funny Lelenore, I don't see that there are very many rules and regs. If it were elected it would notRead More be an infringement. I respect your opinion, but still feel six day time hours out of an entire week is not a lot to ask. If nothing else, would love to see a ban on gas leaf blowers. There are towns that have that in place. The mowers are not really IMHO that intrusive, but the leaf blowers and concrete cutters are another matter. Trouble is, people herebouts think they are in Montana and often are as you say, on 100 by 100 lots. What is the point of having all of this grass and trees if one never has the serenity about them to enjoy it? I think the ill effects of suburban noise pollution on health - blood pressure, aggression, release of the chemical cortisol etc. are well documented. Over a twenty five year period in time in Brick I find that this has become a real quality of life issue. At one point in my life I resided in mid town Manhattan and ya know what - being high up IT WAS QUIETER! Jackson? I don't think so. Doesn't Brielle have such an elective ordinance?

It was suppose to move next to the next liquor store behind Harbor Freight on Hooper. But,they neverRead More did.And when we pass it,it looks like they aren't even working on that side of the building. We miss that place for their deli dept.

They are waiting for the new store to get dirty and smell. It needs to be run down a little bit forRead More it to function properly.
can't say who June 19, 2013 at 05:44 pm
Right next to the liquor store. The reason it is taking so long is the politics of Acropolis andRead More Pat Botazzi. They kept the liquor store from opening for TWO years by controlling the planning board and caused the store owner HUNDREDS OF THOUSANS OF DOLLARES WITH COURT FIGHTS. Acropolis LOST THE COURT FIGHTS BUT CONTINUES TO BEAT UP ON THE LIQUOR STORE'S NEW TENNANT AS RETROBUTION Now Acropolis can play the code enforcement game and still get his happiness as a bigoted soon to be ex mayor and not a nice man. How about denying this. It is going to be a great store with the same owners and great food IF Acropolis doesn't have them go bankrupt due to him before they even open.
