About Half of Barrier Island Gas Main Replaced

NJNG still on target for re-pressurization to begin Dec. 3

New Jersey Natural Gas has replaced 2,275 feet – 48 percent – of its damaged, 12 inch main on the Barnegat Peninsula between Bay Head and Seaside Park.

"Our crews have completed the plugging and capping of all meters, and are retiring individual services where required," said company spokesman Michael Kinney.

The company said Saturday it is still on target to begin repressurizing its main Dec. 3.

Barring unforseen circumstances, the company said all homes deemed safe enough to have gas service restored will have service by the end of December.

On the Ocean County mainland, NJNG said natural gas is now available to 10,351 customers' meters out of 17,250 that were affected by Sandy. Of those who have gas available, 4,536 have turned their service back on.

The company restoration of its main in Long Beach Island is now complete, with all island communities except Holgate having service available. Holgate, however, should have service restored on Monday.

Thanks guys!! Too bad JCPL isn't as aggressive in getting the job done...they just ignored the barrier island while concentrating on the mainland...but that has been fixed for over a week and they still haven't set a target date for when power will be restored...

JCP&L could learn a few things from NJNG. Keep up the great work!

Mainland hasn't really been fixed by JCP&L. Years of lack of maintenance on antiquated power system... according to out-of-state linemen & supervisors who put Band-Aids on it. It will take years for JCP&L's system to become just good enough to keep the lights on during a drizzle!

Wonder if it cost NJNG 1 million a mile to replace their gas line as thats what JCPL projects it would cost to go underground?. Beside that, ever hear of a car veer off the road and crash into a underground gas line?.
Wayne Scott November 25, 2012 at 01:33 pm
Laci, you are correct that a car could not crash into an underground gas line. As you can see even an underground gas line is not impervious to damage. Whether the electrical system is above or below ground it will still be subject to damage. You will just be swapping out one set of problems for another. Where will all of those transformers go that you see on the poles, on the ground (subject to cars veering off of the road) or under the ground (subject to flooding)?
i don't get it?? November 25, 2012 at 03:03 pm
I'm impressed!! Great job NJNG!! ...and about the crashing into above ground poles, that's an entirely different discussion...

It's not NJ Natural gas replacing the main, it's outside contractors from NJ, maybe that is what JCP&L should consider doing.

to go underground, all new equipment needs to be purchased, all new trenches need to be dug for wire. also, keep in mind, an underground system on the barrier island would be much less reliable than on the mainland, do to the salt water in the ground speeds up corrosion immensely, so outages would occur more often as underground vaults get flooded, and equipment gets damaged from being underwater, instead of just being rained on.
