Point Boro Man Charged in Brielle Shooting

Louis Cataldo, a 62-year-old Point Pleasant Borough man, is facing charges of attempted murder and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose in connection with a shooting incident in Brielle that led to his arrest at his home in Point Borough, according to the Monmouth County Prosecutor's office.

Cataldo is charged in connection with shooting a 35 year old woman in the parking lot of the Sand Bar restaurant in Brielle just before 1 a.m. Tuesday, the prosecutor's office said. Following that, Cataldo locked himself in his home in the Bay Point Harbour condominiums on Tuesday, with officers on the scene for hours before Cataldo was taken into custody, the prosecutor's office said.

He is being held at the Monmouth County jail on $1.5 M bail, with no 10 percent option, set by Judge Richard English, said Charlie Webster, spokesman for the Monmouth County Prosecutor's office.

Conditions of the bail include: no victim contact, no return to the scene and surrender of his passport, said Webster.

A number of police vehicles have left the scene and some streets in the area of the Bay Point Harbour neighborhood have been reopened.

At about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, a slew of law enforcement vehicles including a New Jersey State Police Mobile Command Center bus left the area. About 15 minutes later, local police removed a set of barricades at Bay Avenue that blocked the entrance into the neighborhood.

The barricaded suspect was reportedly involved in an overnight shooting in the parking lot of the Sand Bar Restaurant, 201 Union Lane, Brielle, where a woman was wounded.

The victim was shot once shortly before 1 a.m. Tuesday and is in critical but stable condition at a local hospital, according to Webster. When asked for the name of the victim and which hospital she is in, Webster said he did not have that information available.

A large number of police, law enforcement vehicles and unmarked vehicles drove in and out of the scene for hours. Once the barricades were lifted, the public could see law enforcement officers that appeared to be dressed in SWAT gear, and heavily armed, leaving the scene.

Responding cars included one marked car from Little Egg Harbor Township, Manchester, and a brown Lakewood police vehicle that was similar to a Humvee. The Ocean County Sheriff's Department had also been on the scene. And volunteers from the Point Boro First Aid Squad were on standby near the scene.
